Q. Hello: Great site! I am happy to pay the $6.50 for the quality of information you provide. I have a 1989 Grand Am and need to drain the radiator. I found the hose from the coolant reservoir, which appears to be the cap for the radiator as well, but cannot locate any drain plug on the radiator itself. HELP! What I am trying to do is put in something called "Copper Weld" that is supposed to seal gasket leaks. I only use the car for driving around town and don't want to put a lot of money into it. Thanks.
A. 1) Remove radiator cap when engine is cold.Put large container under radiator. ( Remember to properly dispose of used antifreeze) 2) Most models are equipped with drain plugs on the bottom or lower side of one of the end tanks. If the radiator is not equipped with a drain, disconnect the lower radiator hose to allow the coolant to drain.
Q. HELLO, I LOVE THIS SITE BY THE WAY.........MY 1995 CARAVAN HAS 120,000 MILES AND IS OVERHEATING INTERMITTENTLY, THE HEAT ON THE INSIDE WORKS INTERMITTENTLY AS WELL (THERMOSTAT?) IT SEEMS TO DRINK ENGINE COOLANT, BUT NO EVIDENCE OF A LEAK (NEED SEALANT?) WHEN IT DOES OVERHEAT, THE NEEDLE RISES TO 'H' VERY QUICKLY AND DROPS JUST AS QUICKLY......HOT AND COLD.......WEIRD. I ALSO JUST NOTICED THE BELTS SQUEALING WHEN I START UP THE ENGINE....PLEASE HELP!!!!
A. Thanks for the comment. If there is a loss of engine coolant without signs of boiling it's possible that radiator cap seal is bad. That would allow too much coolant to escape to the overflow tank and gradually deplete what's in the system. You could either have a shop pressure check the cooling system and cap or simply try a new cap to see if that helps. The thermostat can cause the condition you described; temperature rising quickly then dropping. If the thermostat has been in the vehicle a long time it is worth changing. Check the water pump drive belt, it may possibly be loose enough to cause the squeal and not run the pump at it's proper speed.
1. Q. 1988 GMC S-15 2.8L trouble code -- 1988 GMC S-15 2.8L trouble code I have a 1988 GMC S-15 2.8L. I am getting a trouble code that says the fuel is lean. I replaced the fuel filter, made sure the fuel pump was running, checked for vaccum leaksby spraying starter fluid around the TBI, made sure the fuel injectors were working correctly. I took the plugs out and they looked good. The service engine light is always on and the truck misses sometimes when pulling but not always. Do you think that it is a faulty oxygen sensor? I just replaced it a month ago. Or something else? Should I take it in to have a diagnostice run on it?
2. Q. 1997 Ford Explorer EGR system fault -- The check engine light recently came on in my 97 Ford Explorer so I brought it to the dealership to have the codes checked out. They informed me it was the EGR valve and pressure transducer that was indicating a problem. Are these things that are fixable by a home mechanic or should I just bring it back to the shop? How major an issue is it if I have to drive my vehicle before fixing the problem?
3. Q. Chevrolet Beretta transmission problem --I have a beretta and it won't drive in reverse and sluggish in drive the previous owner never did a train. oil change and it has a lot of miles to it. what do you think may be my problem?

5. Q. 1997 Ford Escort rough engine idle -- I'm looking at a '97 ford escort with some idling probs. The check engine light is constantly on and the idle is really rough. I'd like to check the engine codes. How do I do so and what are the codes or where can I find them?
6. Q. 1992 Chevrolet Lumina engine stalls-- I have a Chevy Lumina EURO with a 3.1L. After I have driven the car for about 30 minutes the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on. I continue to drive it for about 20 more minutes and when I make a stop or slow to a stop the engine will try to die on me. If I put it into Neutral it runs without a problem. When I put it into gear, Forward or reverse, it will die. I have found that if I start the car, turn the heater on and the fan on high and rev the engine several times that this helps. 75% of the time after performing these steps I can put it into gear and drive on. The other 25% of the time I have to pull off to the side and let the engine cool for about 15-30 minutes and then I can continue driving, usually back home.
7. Q. 1987 Oldsmobile Calais battery won't hold charge -- I have a 1987 Olds. Calais that won't stay charged. I have replaced the battery (with new one) and alternator (3 times). It keeps blowing the startor and diodes from within the alternators, I have a Haynes auto manual, but cannot seem to find the problem. Could it be in the wiring harness? and how would I go about replacing it?

20. Q. 1995 Chevrolet Beretta engine temperature and hesitation -- I have a 1995 Chevy Beretta with 190,000 miles. I have had no problems whatsoever until recently. I began having a higher temp. reading (about 3/4 of the way on the gauge) I had the radiator replaced because of a crack. That did not take care of the problem. My second problem is that when I drive on the highway about 50-70 mile per hour I get a hesitation about every 5 or so miles. It is very short, subtle hesitation. I use fuel injector cleaner every other tank. Could it be the transmission? My third problem is a fast clicking noise when idling. I cannot hear it as much when driving at normal speeds. Any answers!
21. Q. Hi! My name is Jane and I own a '94 Camaro- a gift from my father before I married. Now that I am married- my husband and I have differing opinions about the car. I have two questions. The first is my most important: my husband does not like the temperature that the engine is running (about180d) and had a thermostat installed that would "make the car run cooler". I have had three Camaro cars and all of mine ran that temp or higher. (The red operating zone is 3/4 up the gauge.) Anyway, he had work unknown done to my car and they installed the old type thermostat and he's not happy. He won't even go through a drive thru window for fear it will overheat! I personally don't understand the rationale for a "cooler running thermostat" and think its ridiculous and would probably foul something up. Please offer an opinion before my car gets screwed up. The other question is this: Does the gear shift push-button serve a purpose? My husband refuses to mash the button before changing gears and it infuriates me! I say he's wearing out the teeth on the shift. He says it only serves the purpose of keeping the car from being thrust into another gear while driving. Again- I think that's ridiculous! I have tried the "its my car" routine, but no go. Did I mention he's a lawyer and a mechanical engineer?! Try winning an argument there. I know I'm right, but I need some ammo. If he checks the history and finds this post- I'm dead. Thanks for the much needed advice. Jane

While I'm driving I will all of a sudden have no power for the same displacement of the gas pedal. If I displace it more the car will make popping, banging noises and sometimes regain power. If I pump it once it will normally regain power. What can I check or what can I do to fix this? Your expert advice is greatly appreciated.
46. Q. I have a '91 GMC (S-15) with an electronic, digital instrument panel. The odometer/tripmeter digits disappear after driving several miles. They are always on at a cold startup (all weather conditions) but disappear later, starting with a few segments of the digits, and finally all are gone. Five or ten minutes sitting without running will bring them back to life for a while. The odometer and tripmeter do not lose mileage while they are off----the memory for the gizmo appears to be OK, it is just the display that is weird. All other instruments appear to be functioning correctly. Any ideas about the cause or remedy?

49. Q. I have a 1990 Buick Park Avenue with 126,000 miles. A knocking sound developed that we cannot pinpoint to either the engine or transmission. I understand there is a service bulletin which addresses a knocking sound in the transmission when its cold. Something to do with the transmission pump delivering low pressure. Would you have any ideas?
50. Q. 1990 Chevrolet Lumina engine won't run -- A friend of mine owns a 1990 Lumina. His car was running recently and after approximately 10 minutes of allowing it to warm up, the 'service engine light' light came on and his engine failed and would not run again. The engine does turn-over when he turns the key in the ignition, but won't come to life. Is this supposed to occur when that light comes on and what would cause it to react that way? Thanks for your help. Sven Stuwe
51. Q. 1993 Toyota 4X4 4 cyl poor gas mileage and power -- I have a 93' Toyota 4x4, 4cyl, and it just does not seem to have the power that it should. It also seems like the gas mileage is not as good as it use to be. Thanks for your time.
52. Q. 1987 Chevrolet Astro Van 4.3L V6 timing chain cover-- I have a 87 Chevy Astro van with a 4.3 liter V6. I have replaced the timing chain and am having trouble putting the cover back on, but I am having trouble. The oil pan doesn't want to seem to come loose either. Any suggestions?
53. Q. 1987 Camaro engine vibration -- I have a 1987 Camaro with 81,000 miles on it. I just had to have the original water pump replaced. When I left the garage with the "new" water pump, I got a very noticeable vibration between 1,000 rpm and 1,250 rpm. I took the car back to the garage a couple of days later. The mechanic pulled the water pump, checked it, put it back on, and said everything was fine. He said he thought this was just normal engine vibration. When I left, the vibration was still there. I've put almost 100% of the miles on this car and I absolutely did not have this noisy vibrating before the new water pump was installed. As I said, the vibration only happens between 1,000 and 1,250 rpm and it occurs whether I'm sitting in "Park," backing up in "Reverse," or rolling down the street in "Drive." Above and below those rpms, everything is smooth. Your opinion?

75. Q. this is Scott from Northwest Territories, Canada. I have a 1991, 5.0L, Ford pickup, automatic transmission,100 000 miles.Within the past three months my oil pressure gauge drops to zero whenever I come to a complete stop. It only does that after the motor has been running for about half an hour. Recently, I had an oil change and it didn't happen for about three weeks. I noticed it happened again yesterday. I've had the compression checked and 7 cylinders were 150 psi and 1 was 135. I had the front oil seal replaced in it about two weeks before any of this began to happen.Do you have any suggestions on the likely cause or tests that can be done. Thanks

80. Q. I have a 90 Chevy Lumina Euro Car 3.1 Fuel Injected. Twice now a fuel injector has stuck open, according to the mechanic I have taken it to. The car will completely flood out and put out black smoke while driving, and after stopping will not start at all. Last time he said it even filled the crankcase with gas and had to change the oil also. He has replaced the fuel injector to the tune of about 250.00 each time and now it has done it again. Can the injectors start going out one at a time or is there something causing them to go out. I don't want to keep replacing them if there is something else wrong. The car is currently, again, in the driveway with this problem.
81. Q. Is there a significance in the color of the radiator coolant color? The color of the coolant in the car is green and that is what I have seen. Recently I got some Caltex coolant and found that the color is red. Does it matter, or is it some indicator?

87. Q. The other question I had concerned the 2.9 engine. When it warms to operating condition I am losing compression and power. It has lifters making noise when first start up, they quieted down as the engine warms, and then the loss of compression. I understand this is pretty common in this engine, but have been told several possible problems. What do you think?
88. Q. I recently bought a used Alfa Romeo 155 2.0 TS (1994 production year). When doing some observations I noticed some oil in the air filter tube. Air filter or it's compartment does not contain oil traces. What could be the cause of it and what should be done? Please except apologies for my English.
89. Q. When the engine is cold, the transmission in my front wheel drive will not upshift to overdrive. The highway is right outside my front door, spinning a cold engine at 3500 to 4000 rpm can't be good for it. The dealership & factory claims that the later models have corrected this problem. Is there somekind of replacement computer chip, or something that can be disconnected to stop this lack of shifting. The dealerships only suggestion is buy a new one !
90. Q. I have an 89 Corsica with 130,000 miles. When the car sits for more then 6 hours on days below 30 degrees there is a loud rattle coming from either the engine or transmission for the first 10 minutes of warm-up. The oil pressure is 60 to 80 psi and all fluid levels are good. Could it be a torque converter problem in the transmission? Is there an easy way to trouble shoot this problem?

98. Q. Trans Am sits in the Shop most of the year, I pull it out about every 30-40 days to let it idle. Recently when I went to pull it out it would not start. I changed plugs, distributor cap and rotor. Plugs are getting spark and appears to be getting gas. I did manage to get it started before replacing anything, but I had to press the accelerator hard to the floor. This appeared to bring another problem, I changed the oil shortly afterwards and found gas in the engine oil, when I changed the # 8 spark plug, gas pored out of the cylinder plug hole. Any ideas?
99. Q. I pulled out the spark plugs again today, no gas came out of any plugs this time but 5 out the 8 were wet.
100 Q. I have an 88 1.6L SOHC carbeurated corolla coupe with 82,xxx miles on it. About a month or two ago i noticed the car running a little warm(close to the middle mark). So i took it to a shop where i usually take my car. They do decent work. The mechanic flushed the radiator and also installed a thermostat that opened up a little earlier. I thought it solved the problem until i started to drive it home (about 10 miles on the highway) and it started to get warm again. However i found when i turned on the heater to high..it would lower the temperature gauge. So i did this for about a month. (Not driving it under any extreme conditions or far distances, no highway driving) Then about 3 weeks ago the alternator went out. And suddenly the engine was running at normal operating temperature. So today i replaced the alternator. now the charging system is back to normal. However the car is now running warm again, even at idle for an extended period of time. It would get to the middle mark but the fan would kick in and bring it down. ANY help on this topic would be appreciated, its puzzling me and some people ive spoken to. Thank you.
101. Q. hello auto expert, My 97 Kia Sportage(2.0, fuel inj) just started sputtering.Itook it to the dealer and thay ran a the computer on it and it said bad EGR valve. Is there anyway i can get out of paying the 170 bucks they want to charge for me it by doing something obvious or do i need to bite the bullet? Idont know much about cars but im learning and im tired of getting ripped off. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
102. Q. My Corsica idles very rough. The initial startup in the morning produces an ungodly smell coupled with blowing carbon out the tail. Which leaves quite an attractive black residue on my driveway. When I pull out it chugs, pukes, and produces black & white smoke. Have a steady check engine light while idling, but once driving after about 15 seconds light extinguishes and ride becomes smooth again. But once I stop for more than 10-15 seconds the rough idle and the check engine light return. I changed plugs & O2 sensor because the old ones were black with carbon. Also changed plug wires & fuel filter for good measure, no joy. So I checked codes using ALDL connector. It gave me a 33 (MAP sensor-low vacuum) and a 45 (oxygen sensor-rich exhaust). I replaced the MAP sensor being that I had already replaced a "bad" O2 sensor. Still no Luck. Any ideas??
103. Q. Morph, My 'truck' has been in storage for 9 months. I have push button 'on the fly' 4wd switch above my rear view mirror. Pushing either button '4high/4low' will do nothing and the fuses under my dash are all good. Is there a fuse for this located under the hood and if so where. If the motor for the 4wd is dead shouldn't the lights for 4high come on even if the motor doesn't engage? thx tons, blink
104. Q. I have a 93 Ford Taurus LX 3.8 that is experiencing rough idle, slight hesitation and excessive moisture from tail pipe during start-up. These symptoms appear more severe on cooler days. This symptom lasts only the first 1-2 minutes of operation then the car runs fine and acts normal. I've been told that this could be a bad head gasket resulting in oxygen sensors going out. What do you think could be causing this problem.
105. Q. I own a 1993 Cavalier 4 cylinder, 4-door. Recently I noticed that after about 10 minutes of driving after a cold (winter) start the "check gages" light may come on. when it comes on it seems to stay on. If I pull-over and turn the engine off at and re-start the car, the indicator goes out. At times it comes on again and others it stays off. A possibly related problem: recently the heater has been working poorly (low heat on high settings of the slider switches on the console). Any ideas what this may be? Could it be as simple as a fuse for the indicator lamp or is it something more complicated? Is it dangerous to keep driving it in this state? I would appreciate it if you could let me know.
106. Q. My name is Michael and I live in Tennessee. I have a 1994 2 Door Hatch Back Ford Escort LX 1.9L 5 Speed....I've looked EVERYWHERE for the clutch reservoir to add fluid to it but I cant seem to find it anywhere. It's starting to act like it needs fluid as the gears are getting harder to shift. I'm hoping adding fluid will solve the problem and I won't have to replace the whole clutch. I'd REALLY hate to take it to the shop for something so small. Is there any way you can help me? Thank you for any help you may be able to give to me.
107. Q. I have a 1989 Honda Accord LX-i with 139,000 miles and have a question regarding control of the cooling fans. The radiator fans are not cycling on when they should. The car will run hot if idling still for a period of time but not when cruising. I've replaced the temperature sensor (located near the bottom of the radiator) and both cooling fan relays, without success. When the A/C is ON, I've noticed the fans cycle properly, so I don't believe the fan motors are faulty. Any suggestions? Thanks.
108. Q. I have a 1993 S-10 Blazer with a 4.3L Vortex Engine. I recently had an antifreeze leak repaired by the dealer which required the removal of the intake manifold. The next day I noticed a loss in oil pressure (from 40 lbs to 0 -15 lbs). I returned the vehicle to the dealer who found antifreeze in the oil pan. I am now told that the crankshaft bearings have been damaged and must be replaced. My question is should the oil have been changed by the dealer after reinstallation of the intake manifold? Is it possible for antifreeze to get into the oil as a result of this repair?
109. Q. I have a problem with the fusible link blowing between the alternator and the starter. This wire is from the back of the alternator and to the battery terminal on the starter. I replace the alternator, all the fusible links and checked all the wires. The starter draws 10 volts on start up and the alternator puts out 14.8 volts. The fuse blows on startup. Please any ideas would help me greatly.

113. Q. I have a 1991 GMC 4 x 4 pickup, 5.7 liter motor. The problem I am having is the electronic fuel injection seems to be flooding out the motor. It is worse when the motor is cold. As the motor warms up the problem clears up but still is running rich. What do you think is the problem?
114. Q. Hey Morph! I have a 1986 Jeep Wagoneer with a 2.5l 4 cyc. My jeep doesn't seem to run cool regardless of replacing the thermostat, waterpump, hoses, head gasket, radiator cap, flushing the entire system. It does not leak water, it holds a pressure test of both the system and the cap. There is no oil in the water or water in the oil. I have tried two different water pumps(each of a different direction). The Jeep has serpentine belt and the pump drives counter clock wise. With all said and done, the jeep still overheats and the engine does not have circulation in the cooling system. HELP! Thank You, Stumped in PA.

121. Q. Hope you can help. Had a friend "tune up" (plugs, dist. cap, wires), on the way home within 1/4 mile, lights started dimming, etc. Thought it was the alt. gone bad. Was told needed to just replace it. Wasn't showing that it was charging at all. Did that, but it still isn't showing that it is charging. The Haynes book says to check fuses, fusible links, and to start with a charged battery. It is a 1988 GMC Vandura custom van. Haven't been able to find a source that shows a wiring diagram to locate any possible short or loose wiring etc. Any suggestions. Appreciate any help, Single, struggling,Mom.
122. Q. My Ford Ranger (4-c 2.3 L) is having an over voltage problem. The gauge reads about 15 volts inside the truck, I verified that the voltage at the battery reads the same voltage. I just changed out the alternator /voltage regulator (one in the same unit) and the readings are still the same. I even changed out the coil that mounts on the chassis but the readings stay the same. I was able to check continuity from the Alternator to the power distribution box and the wire that goes between the regulator and alternator. I even verified the wires going to chassis ground. All my fuses measure good. What could cause this over-voltage to occur? Please help. Going crazy working on truck. Rich

127. Q. My 1990 Dodge Caravan driver side door caught a 50 mph gust of wind pushing the door forward. Now when the door is opened or closed there is a creaking sound & there is a slight bulge in the fender about 8 inches in from the fender edge. My question is: Does this sound like a problem that is fixable without special tools/equipment? and How difficult is it to remove the drivers side fender?
128. Q. Hi, I am having trouble locating my turn signal flasher. I have found the hazard warning flasher and a horn relay, but I can't find the signal flasher. Where would it be located on a 1994 Chevy Corsica? Thanks for your help. Renee
129. Q. I have a 1975 C4 automatic transmission that will not shift automatically. I can shift manually and the vehicle will go but the transmission refuses to shift automatically. I do have vacuum (although I don't know how much) and have replaced the vacuum modulator. I recently replaced the engine and at the same time had the torque converter and front pump rebuilt. The clutches and bands appeared to be O.K. I did notice some fine debris in the pan. Any suggestions?
130. Q. I have a 92 OLDS Toronado. I recently noticed that my oil pressure reading stays around 90psi while driving and goes down to 30 while at a stop. I am also having a problem with my automatic transmission not shifting as smoothly as it use to. However it seems find until my oil pressure goes up. I came cross an article that says this hard shifting out of first can be cause by high oil pressure. My manual says that my oil pressure is find as long as it doesn't go into the red. By the way it only shifts hard out of first well I really don't want to say hard cause that can be misleading but it is not as smooth the way it used to be. I change my transmission fluid and filter the same with the oil, so do you have any Idea what may be going on?
131. Q. I want to change my fuel filter on my 95 Honda civic dx (1.5l), but a friend of mine told me I should get it done. Is this something I can do? I've heard you can do this by pulling the fuel pump fuse and running the car till it stalls, then turn it over a few times. Then replace the fuse, take off the old filter and replace with the new one, and turn the ignition on and check for leaks. Is this true? Could I do this?
132. Q. For 1984 ford ranger 2.8 liter will the heads from a 2.9 liter fit.
133. Q. Our 93 Altima developed a miss. We took it to a mechanic. They gave it a tune up, replaced the distributor cap, plugs, & wires. It ran fine until we got home & then it died. We took it back & they replaced the wires again. We picked it up, ran fine all the way home. Again we turned the car off & once restarted it died shortly there after. We took it to a Nissan dealership & they diagnosed it as a bad distributor. We went back to the original mechanic who relaced the distributor & again it ran fine all the way home. But once we turned it off & restarted it died & was very hard to start, sometimes taking up to 10 minutes to crank. They replaced the distributor again & it is still happening. Everyone is stumped? It runs fine until it is turned off & then restarted. Can anyone help? Donny & Deanne in Texas
134. Q. How do I access the computer codes on my 1994 Chevy Corsica? The Haynes book says to jump pins A & B, but this plug only has pins A & M. It is a front wheel drive V-6 fuel injected 3.1 liter. thanks. Dave
135. Q. Hello, I own a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am. My car was hit in the front quarterpanel on the driver's side. I took the car to the body shop and it was running fine the only problem was the damage to the bumper and quarterpanel. I just got the car back and the is "jumping" and "hesitating". The only way I can help describe it is it drives like a car with a bad fuel filter or fuel injector. The body shop guy said he thought it was condensation, however, I didn't think it would be condensation or fuel filter because the engine light is on. Is there a plug or something that may not have been plugged back in which would cause this problem. Thank you.
136. Q. I have disconnected my alternator for a 1989 Honda Accord LX but I can't get it from under the hood, I need help
137. Q. where is the radiator drain plug located on a 1989 chevy corsica?
138. Q. My 1995 Chevy Corsica was acting up in several ways. It was shaking when idling, there was a clunking noise when I shifted gears and worst of all, a few times after I shifted gears especially, the brake pedal would barely depress at all. The mechanic charged $1000 to replace the spark plugs and wires, the fuel pump (an entire assembly apparently, you can't buy just the fuel pump) and replace what he said was a broken top motor mount. He said the motor mount was causing the clunking. I still notice clunking. Is it possible for me to check myself if the motor mount has been replaced properly? I'm not sure I trust these mechanics anymore.
139. Q. can you check the cooling radiator fan on 1994 Dodge Caravan? Drove the van about 20 miles and when I stopped and checked the fan was not on. Looked again after turning off the van and was still not turning. The temp gage was in the middle of hot and cool, but there was some smoke coming from in front of the radiator. We also had the heater on. Thanks!

141. Q. Hello, my name is Donny and I'm having a hard time trying to figure out my problem. I have a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix, 3.1 liter, F.I., non-turbo. The problem is that my engine idles rough. It is also rough when I'm at cruising speeds but if I give it some gas it smoothes out. I've changed the spark plugs and wires. My mechanic said that all of the sensors showed that they were operating correctly and I had no vacuum leaks. My car also uses twice as much gas as normal. I've spent over $50.00 in fuel injector cleaner and there was no improvement. I would very much appreciate your help or any advice you can give. Thank you.

148. Q. 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.0L engine problem -- very hard to start cold, the spark plugs foul with gas about once a month, and some of the vacuum hoses were broken when I bought it. What I would like to know is if you could send me a vacuum diagram (my haynes repair manual doesn't have ANY info on vacuum lines for some reason) so I could replace the missing ones? Also, I just rebuilt the TBI and replaced the o2 sensor and pcv valve -- and it still fouls the plugs, but not NEARLY as fast as it used to (I was getting oil in the air intake from the valve cover).I also checked the distrib rotor and wires -- not bad, but the ignition coil is covered with what looks like rust. Could it be not enough spark to cause fuel fouling, or is it something to do with unused fuel return (due to vacuum)? Any help is appreciated.
149. Q. I am working on a 1989 Chevrolet Beretta GT 2.8L V6. Recently the car had a miss at idle, I found that one of the coils was cracked so I replaced all three along with the spark plug wires. Now the car just sputters when I try to start it. Some cylinders are firing and some are not. I rechecked all the wires and connections. Any suggestions? I guess I could have installed the module wrong, but there was really only one way to install it. The car is not spitting out any error codes. I am probably going to replace the Ignition Module next, but that is a pain to get to. Is there a test for this while it is on the car? Some other items I have had to replace recently are: Spark Plugs, ECM, Torque Converter Lockup Solenoid (That one was fun!).
150. Q. Question; help please several dealers are telling me I need to replace my power steering rack because I have a leak, could this possibly be just a leak in a line or seal?? who can help me without ripping me off

152. Q. After replacing the engine head gasket, intake gasket, exhaust gasket, thermostat, radiator, coolant fluid. Car experienced over heated after 20 minutes of driving. I inspected the car condition and noticed the following: The heater is not blow hot air like it used to be. The temperature gauge needle is at 1/2 way and getting close to the hot zone. The radiator is cold. The radiator upper hose is warm but not hot. The radiator lower hose is hot. The water pump is not leak or make noise and the vane is about 20 percent worn. Please help. Thanks

155. Q. What is the spark gap setting for a 1993 Ford Escort 1.9L SEFI engine.
156. Q. Autoexpert, I recently purchased a Lexus es300 2001 and it was only a week old when I noticed the paint chipping on the hood. I have brought it in and the dealer claimed rocks and salt caused it. I disagree because they are as far up as the windshield and also on the wheel well of the drivers side front of the car. They "touch-up" the paint and it looks horrible for a car I paid $32,999 cash!!!!! What are my options and have you heard about poor quality paint jobs from Lexus, the color is vintage red.
157. Q. 1990 Nissan pick up truck, 4 cylinder, engine KA24E, fuel injection MPI, no A/C or power steering, 5 speeds. After replacing the engine head gasket, intake gasket, exhaust gasket, thermostat, radiator, coolant fluid. Car experienced over heated after 20 minutes of driving. 159. Q. My 1972 Chevy 350 backfires intermittently when accelerating. Doesn't seem to matter if it's cold or hot. I have the stock distributor with points ignition and an Edelbrock Performer RPM with 600 cfm carb. The car runs fine otherwise and doesn't seem to lack power. What should I check?
160. Q. Hi my jeep has bin stalling the last couple of days. It turns on fine in the morning but about 20 minutes or so of driving it starts to stall, and eventually comes to a complete stop. Sometimes it turns on right away sometimes it takes at least an hour after the engine has been turned of before it turns on again. I have changed the distributor coil and module it fixed the problem for two days then the problem came back. if you can please help me with a possible solution or tip it would greatly be appreciated, thank you
161. Q. 1986 Audi Coupe GT. I am from Detroit Michigan and I have a problem with my cars defogger. The car fogs up so bad that I have to keep rain x antifog in my car and I have to wipe it on my windshield before I leave for work and before I drive home from work. I keep the car out doors and the problem is much worse during the winter and rainy days. The air conditioner is broken so I cannot turn the AC on with the heat. What do you suggest?
162. Q. Hi, I replaced the front plugs on my 3.3L Dodge Caravan w/o too much trouble. I knew the back plugs were gonna be tougher .......but I could only see one of them. A friend said he thought there was a way to remove a bolt from the motor mount, pry the engine up, and put the bolt back into a second hole in the mount thus holding the engine up in a way to make the back plugs more accessible. He thought he could loan me a Chilton Manual which illustrated this but couldn't find the illustrations in his manual. But he was pretty sure he had done this before w. a 3.3L V-6 in another type Dodge vehicle. Can you offer any further clarification of this process or suggest any other easier ways to get at those back plugs? HELP!!! There's gotta be an easier way......(other than paying someone else to do it of course.)
163. Q. I have an old (1990) Toyota Corolla with 160,000 miles on it. It runs well, but one of the control panel lights has burned out and I can't see the speedometer at night. I could not see any obvious way to replace the light. Is this a job for an amateur, or does it require major work like removing the dashboard?
164. Q. I have a 1991 Ford Econoline Van with two fuel tanks. This winter when the temp dropped below freezing I couldn't start the van. I checked for a spark and that was fine. I didn't smell any gas though and figured it was a fuel delivery problem. The next day it warmed up and I was able to start it. I figured that I had water in the lines so while it was running I put dry gas in the tanks and gave it a long drive and it worked fine. The next day it was below freezing and again it wouldn't start. This has happened a number of times and seems to be temperature related. Help!!! What's going on here? Bob from Mass.
165. Q. Morph, the van has 144,000 miles on and until recently it ran great. Recently it started to hesitate upon cold acceleration, then the fuel consumption got very poor, currently it is 7 MPG. I have replaced the MAS, O2 sensor, ECT sensor, TPS, spark plugs and plug wires, cleaned the IAC, replaced the PCV, replaced the fuel filter. The only items that haven't been replaced is the EGR valve (can't locate it on the engine) and the fuel pressure regulator. Now I'm beginning to suspect EEC. The engine will not go into fast idle on startup and during the warm-up period it runs very rich, the exhaust has left large black carbon deposits on the driveway, once warmed up to operating temp it runs great, but like I stated, sure sucks up the fuel. I'm located in the "show me" state of Missouri and this has been a rough winter so working in a cold garage is not my idea of a "fun" time. Appreciate any tips, suggestions or word of wisdom you can offer. I've about used up all the ideas in my Haynes Ford manual..Thanks
166. Q. The Washer and Wiper are not working on my 1993 Ford Escort. What could possibly be the problem?
167. Q. I have an 1987 Chevy S-10 Blazer 4-Wheel drive. On occasion while driving down the road there is a very severe vibration in the front end. Seems to be in the 4-wheel drive system but not sure. The vibration sometimes gets bad enough it almost takes the steering wheel out of my hands. Has worn CV joints, was wondering if maybe they were binding up? Any ideas? Thanks, Chad in Nodaway IA
168. Q. Hi There, I am from Toronto, Canada. I have a 89 Pontiac Tempest with 2.8L V6 Multiport engine. Since last month or so, my car started to choke and stall when I press the acceleration. It also took me a number of tries to start the car in the morning or when the car's been sitting for a while (basically when the engine is cold). Sometimes in the morning, when the car starts, it dies right away and also the car's giving me poor gas mileage. Last week, I replaced the spark plugs and the wires. It solved my stalling/choking problem. But, I still have to try 2 to 3 times to start the car in the morning and finally it will start. I'm also still getting poor gas mileage. Can you tell me what other things I should replace in order to make it start in the morning right away? How can I fix the gas problem? I'm spending way too much money on gas (and it's pretty expensive here).
169. Q. My service engine light came on and the engine runs rough at idle and smells bad,ie converter rotten egg smell. It had the same symptoms 6 months ago and the dealer replaced the EGR valve. This solved the problem at the time. It has 87,000 miles, doesn't smoke or use oil. My question is how do I jumper the diagnostic terminal to retrieve the engine trouble code myself?
170. Q. Hello, I have a 91 Honda civic hatchback 1.5 . My question is that whenever you turn the key to start the car both cooling fans come on. No matter what temp the engine is. I unplugged the ac compressor fan but left the engine cooling fan plugged in. What should I check or look for to get these fans to work correctly? Thanks Justin.
171. Q. Could you please tell me how the timing marks are to be lined up (and where are they) when replacing the timing belt on a 1986 4 cylinder, 1.6 L Chevy Nova. I got the old belt off on Saturday and ordered the new belt. The new belt will be in on Tuesday Feb. 8/01. Is there any thing else that should be changed or replaced at the same time. Information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ruth
172. Q. 93 Dodge Caravan LE w/3.3L V-6. I bought this vehicle used and it seems in great condition. Had my mechanic check it over real well but he was unsure about a noise that occurs when you apply the brakes. It's difficult to describe, but it's like a cross between a hum and a buzzing sound, and it seems to be coming from inside the vehicle rather than from the wheels. It's funny but it seems to occur only every other time I apply the brakes and sometimes when I start the vehicle, and even occasionally if I'm stopped in traffic with my foot on the brake pedal. They are ABS brakes and they seem to be working quite well. I thought about consulting the Dodge dealer, but wanted to get some idea beforehand about what might be the cause. Thanks, Dave Smith.
173. Q. I must replace the timing belt on a 94 Ford Escort, It broke while driving at approx 55 mph, All belts on this car, was just replaced except the timing belt... I know that I must reach TDC (Top Dead Center) and I believe the mark on the top pulley is obvious... But I don't know what the other marks even look like. I'm not able to remove the engine so I can't just look at them for marks... Can you give me some idea of where and what to look for? there are 3 pulleys..... Any help would be appreciated...

175. Q. Hello, my name is Chris. I'm 16 and i just got my first auto. its an '88 chevy s-10 blazer. the person that sold it to me said that the engine had no problems with it and i even took it for a test drive and everything went alright. than the other day i started it up and it started leaking large amounts of antifreeze. but when i turned the car off it stopped. i have no idea what's causing the leak, and I'm a little short on cash to be able to take it to get looked at, so I was wondering if u had any suggestions. thanx in advance Chris
176. Q. thank you for helping me. I have a 1985 ford bronco, 5.8L, 4x4, I need to check the actuator rod in the steering column, to verify its integrity by R&R.
177. Q. hello, i own a 1992 Honda accord ex. recently during the cold snap here in Miami i noticed that the idle during a cold start was very high and after a few minutes begins to fluctuate up and down. you can see it on the tach. when i begin driving the problem seems to correct itself after 10-15 minutes. also is there a web site which shows the component locations for my engine? thanks for your help. Joe - Miami Florida
178. Q. I have a 1995 Corsica and when the service engine light came on the diagnostics indicated a problem with the EGR valve. I have had that replaced and I still experience intermittent missing or hesitation during acceleration. I can still feel some sluggishness at about 30-40 mph but it does not miss as badly. I have looked under the hood and noticed that the hose leading from the bottom of the valve in to the engine is loose and does not seem to be secure to the valve. I was wondering if this is some sort of vacuum hose that needs to be replaced. Also, all I replaced was the valve and gaskets. Does anyone recommend any other actions?
179. Q. Hello AutoExpert, I have a question (hopefully an easy one). I received a new shift know that should work with all brands of cars, but the thing is, I cant get my original shift knob off. I have a 91 chevy corsica with the 3.1L v6 and automatic transaxle.
180. Q. I have spark to the plugs and I am getting fuel to the carb. I checked all the fuses and tested the links, they are all fine. What should I check next? Should I try push starting it. or do you think all 4 spark plugs could go bad at once?
181. Q. I HAVE A DODGE CARAVAN 1993, STALLS WITHOUT WARNING, MECHANIC SAID THAT HE HAS TO CHANGE THE ACID SENSOR,DO YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ACID SENSOR.
182. Q. While attempting to remove the crankshaft sensor from my 1991 Lumina 3.1L engine, the sensor would not budge, and when I applied force the sensor broke in half below the o-ring seal. Currently there is about 1-1/4" of the sensor left in the sensor hole of my engine block about 1" below the top of the hole. I have been able to drill 1/8" holes through the plastic that surrounds the approximate 1/2" diameter by 1-1/4" long permanent magnet. I have been told, however, by a representative of the manufacturer (Wells Manufacturing Corp.) of the replacement sensor, that the following may describe my predicament: "The clearance between the magnet tip and the crankshaft is only 0.050". If the sensor moves down and contacts the crankshaft, the magnet cannot be dislodged without removing the oil pan and pushing it out from behind," I prefer to continue drilling the plastic enclosure away from the magnet and eventually trying to insert one or more sheet metal screws into the broken off piece. I have been able to drill completely through the sensor piece with a number of holes. I am surprised it has not started to budge. I would like to avoid the laborious process of removing the oil pan.
183. Q. Ruth in Bedford needs to know what to do about fuel leaking out of the gas cap on a 80 VW rabbit. The car is fuel injected and it seems the gas tank is always under pressure no matter what the level is in the tank. Sometimes, whether full or 1/2 empty I see gas stains running out from the fuel cap. I had the fuel lines from the tank to the fuel pump replaced but that did not do the trick. Any suggestions? Also, the engine was cutting out when I got below a 1/2 tank. The mechanic said there was an internal pick up hose that has corroded and will not let the pump pick up fuel below this level. Since, I have kept the tank between full and 1/2 I have had no problems. Does this sound right or is someone blowing smoke in my face?
184. Q. This is J.R. from Dallas, I have a 94 Taurus. The electric radiator fan does not come on at high temperature when at idle or in traffic. It will operate when the AC is turned on. Does this mean I need a new constant control relay module (CCRM) and if so where is it located? Is there another fix besides replacing this relay?
185. Q. The solenoid for the starter does not pick up. It acts as if the inhibit switch for the transmission is enabled; nothing comes up but the idiot lights. Doesn't happen all the time just occasionally and everyone initially points at gears on the starter but if the solenoid doesn't pick up it can't be that. I have a Haynes manual and the only thing I can see that would cause that would be the inhibit switch, but wouldn't that happen all the time? Is there any feedback from another component that I'm not seeing that will disengage the start circuit? Thanks.....
186. Q. I have a 1984 Chrysler LeBaron that is having brake problems. The front disks intermittently won't release. I replaced the pads and cleaned up the calipers, however, while doing this, the left hand piston would not compress unless the bleeder valve was opened. When the pedal was depressed, fluid flowed freely out of the bleeder. The right hand side was fine. Both sides are dragging, sometimes so bad, the car won't hardly move. I have tried shutting it off and pumping the brakes to relieve the vacuum when this happens to no avail. I thought maybe it was a collapsed hose, but if that were the case, it should have opened up when I was trying to compress the piston. About all that is left is a check valve in the master cylinder, or a bad return spring in the booster, however, the pedal seems to return normally. When it does this the pedal feel is very firm. When it is not doing this, the pedal feel is very normal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AaronB.
187. Q. I have a 1991 Renault 19TSE, 1400cc. It has single point fuel injection. Sometimes, when I start the car it runs fine, but other times it is very lumpy, with the rev counter bouncing round like crazy. It has reached the point where it is sometimes very difficult to keep the engine ticking over at all. When it is playing up, the problem gets worse with every electrical load, ie., heater, wipers, lights, radio. It's not a problem with the plugs or the battery. What else could be causing this fault?
188. Q. had a motor swap after the original ran hot and now the engine will turn over but will not run. Looking at the Haynes manual I have, it referred me to the ECM diagnostic test. With the key in the ON position but without the engine running, there should be a steady lamp. The lamp isn't burning and I'm wondering just what could be causing that. I read 5 volts at the coolant temperature sensor which is an ECM reference voltage and I also have no voltage coming out of the ignition module to the distributor. I understand this is probably due to the ECM problem but I'm not sure how to proceed. Is there a way to check power going to the ECM or can you tell me what could cause this no indication at the ECM? Any help is greatly appreciated.
189. Q. have a 97' Mazda 626 I recently bought used from a dealership. We bought it with the engine light on. Took it into the dealer and they ended up having to replace the oil pump. Now, less than 3 months later the engine light is on again. When we bought the car the engine did stall sometimes until we got the pump replaced. Since the engine light is on, could it be anything from as serious as an oil pump to old antifreeze? Does Mazda use the engine light for just any old small problem in order to collect the service fee of $50.00 or is it usually because something serious is wrong with it? Can most or some non-dealership service centers hook up the computer and check out the problem? Thanks!
190. Q. Where is the blower motor in a 1989 Cutlass Ciera?
191. Q. Found a couple sensors (vehicle speed sensor, revolution sensor) that the engine installer broke and also a wire bundle crossed. Works decent now but will not start occasionally until you push the car a few feet forward or back. I'm getting an EGR flow problem and the EGR valve is good. It's vacuum driven and I'm wondering if I've got a hose crossed now. Any further assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks
192. Q. I have a 1988 Honda Prelude that I bought without a battery hold down. My problem is that I can't figure out where a replacement one would go. There are no mounting holes in the usual places on the battery tray. I just bought a new battery for it and don't want to ruin it by having it bounce around in the engine compartment. I'd appreciate any help you can offer!
193. Q. I drive a 1980 Corvette and was hearing some noise in the rear end. I immediately took it to a mechanic. I was hearing a high pitch sound like a loose belt and a clanking like sound like a loose brake pad. I drove it for about two miles before I made it to the mechanics' shop. He checked the u-joints, the wheel bearings, and brake pads and all of these were in good working condition. The next thing checked was the differential oil level, which was a quart low. There is evidence of a leak in the front portion of the differential housing. I checked the specs on fluid level in Chilton and it was only four pints. My question is did I catch this in time or did I already damaged the gears? The clanking noise is gone and the car performs all right, but I am concern. I still hear a sound like a loose belt, but it is not all the time. Is there any tests that I can perform to check damage? I do not want to drive it anywhere, if there is a chance of further damage. The car only has 76,000 original miles on it. I have check the air pressure in the tires and I read in Chilton Corvette 1963 to 1983 (1986ed)on page 304 that sometime road surface vibrations is distributed to the rear end and makes sound similar to a differential going out. Thank you for your time and kind consideration.
194. Q. I have a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan with 39,000 miles, I am the original owner. My service engine light had gone on @ about 2,900 miles, I took it into the dealer and he said there is nothing wrong with the car that its just a service reminder to change the oil and it would come on at so many miles, not to worry if the car was running fine. Well, the car has always ran great, no problems. BUT the SES light is on and I need to get it smogged and no one will smog it until the light has been turned off. Is there anyway to reset (turn off) the SES light without taking it to the dealer. Thanks CJ
195. Q. have a 1989 Ford F-150 with a six cylinder 300 motor? Could you please tell me what tool to use or what process I have to do before I remove my Fuel Injectors
196. Q. Hi We have 1993 Dodge Caravan that will just stall without warning. Rain, shine, cold, hot, it doesn't seem to matter what the conditions are. It will stall out and then everything will be fine for a few months. We had the fuel pump replaced and the distributor cap replaced. When we take it to our friendly mechanic, nothing shows up on computer. Any suggestions????
197. Q. 1996 Lincoln Town Car...electrical power to trunk but will not release from remote or door release button...please advise what I can do to correct this problem....is it easy installation? Thanks...Bob
198. Q. I have a 1984 Z28 Camaro with an Automatic Transmission. It has always worked fine, nice and tight gear switching and everything. Anyways....I was going down the highway and the RPM's shot up to around 5000 and the only gear I have is low gear. It seems like overdrive just disappeared??? Do you have ANY idea what happened or what caused this? I hope so. Thanks for you time.
199. Q. I have a 90 Ford Escort with a 1.9L CFI engine (Auto). I have replaced most of the major sensors (MAP, ECT, ACT, O2), fuel filter and plugs; however, the car will run good for the first 3 or 4 minutes and then kill itself with gas. So much so that it literally runs out of the exhaust. I assume that the first 3 or 4 min. are in open loop according to the standard Ford ECC computers, and the shut down occurs when it hits closed loop, but WHY? and how can I fix it? Help Please....
200. Q. I have just acquired a 1995 Lexus ES300, V6, 82,000 miles, Everything seems fine except. In the morning the automatic gears do not shift from 2nd to 3rd, until after the car is driven approximately one and a half miles. After that everything functions properly. We usually do not drive over 2,500 RPM's. The Dealer checked the car, and he drove over 3,000 RPM's and the normal shifting did not take as long to correct itself. The fluid was checked and was ample, but appeared discolored. The 30 day warranty is running out, and of course the Dealer does not to do anthing. Is this shift problem typical to the car, or is there a possible problem? Can a synthetic transmission fluid be used in the transmission? Thank you for your help, Maverick
201. Q. I have a 1995 Chevy Tahoe with a 5.7 litre engine. The serpentine belt has slipped off completely 2 times during the last six months. The first problem I have is releasing tension on the belt tensioner. Tried using the bolt running through the tensioner, but this just appears to remove the entire tensioner assembly. I have resorted to prying the tensioner pulley back by the only available method. I have to grab the pulley with my fingers and pull it up so the belt can be slid under the pulley. This is extremely difficult and unsafe. I have checked my Chiltons manual to see that it says to pry the tensioner open and slide the belt under the pulley. Do you have a better method to accomplish belt removal and installation?
202. Q. HI I NEED THE FUSE PLACEMENT DIAGRAM FOR A 1989 FORD TAURUS PLEASE
203. Q. I have a 1991 Dodge D150 with a 318 V8, the engine just started missing on my way home, When I put the transmission in gear and hold the brake to stall the motor the motor will miss and back fire and then die. What do I need to check, is it possible that I have gotten water in the fuel system or is it just time to work on the ignition system? Please let me know. David
204. Q. I have a question....I just bought a 87 chevy ....with a 2.8 V-6. When I started it knocked really load (sounded like a rod about to come through the block)....I let it run about a min. and it suddenly completly stopped......I was kinda shocked, well a half a min. later it began pounding again. I was told a person drove this car over 1000 miles making this awlful pounding and i drove it home @10 miles also. Is there anything else that could knock so loud (like a rod).****upon driving i did notice the pitch of the knock varied alot with engine speed.......(this is no valvetrain knock either).********The engine holds good oil preasure even at idle....Any idea what else it could possible be ???? I have never heard of a spun bearing just stop pounding and then return.....several times.....*********just looking for answers**********Thanks David

208. Q. Hi..my name is Rob....i own an 86 Honda Prelude Si Automatic.....i've owned this car for just over 3yrs now....and the other week...i was driving down Interstate 95, and i was doing about 70mph...when suddenly my PGM-FI light came on (i assume this means the Programed Fuel Injector), anyway the light just came on...but my rpm's, didn't go up or down....and i was still able to drive without any noticeable problems with the car..it still ran smooth all the way home...however...i pulled off to stop and see what was wrong..and when i put the car in park...the rpm's just started going from 1000-500 up and down...and my motor sounded as if it wanted to shut off...it didn't...i turned off the car....waited a few minuets....started and everything seemed fine. Then a few days later....again...i got up to about 70 and same thing...light on...motor hesitation in park..but drove fine.....i've taken very good care of my car...serviced regularly...no one mentioned anything about this to me...so i'm very concerned as to what this problem is and if i need to have my Fuel injector replaced...and how much that would cost?...also....am i doing any damage to my car driving while that light is on?.....my car has about 177,000miles on it...other than this problem..runs great. Also i have noticed a squeeking...rubbing sound coming from the front left wheel while the car is rolling....any ideas as to what this could be?....Thanks in advance to any type of help you can give me! :)
209. Q. hi my name is Billy and i own a 87 trans gta. it started to idle rough a few weeks ago and i have done sreveral things to try and fix it. i have changed the wires and cleaned the plugs. also have had the fuel filter replaced and had the car checked for a vacume leak. the distributor cap has been cleaned and checked for cracks. i have tested the ignition coil and it reads less than one ohm as is said to in a repair manual. i have two things in mind and that is the throttle position sensor and the pick-up coil. could either one of these be the problem? i also noticed that the engine only runs rough when at an idle mainly in gear. once i accelerate it goes away and is not felt at all while riding. then when i let off the gas and slow down to a certain speed the car seems to buck as if i were tapping the gas on and off quickly. please help. thanx. p.s. it has a 305 tpi
210. Q. Our van was not heating properly so we took it in to have the thermostat repaired ($211). When we got it back, it still did not heat properly and had an awful smell of antifreeze. We just assumed it was burning off any antifreeze that had spilled on the outside. This continued, however, after several days. We took it back to the shop and they claim to have replace the spark plugs and some wires ($60). And now they are saying that the heater core has to be replaced at $560. The smell of antifreeze was not there the first time we took it in to the shop. Could they have possibly damaged the heater core when they put in the thermostat? Is replacing the heater core something we could do ourselves? If so, where could we get the directions and diagrams for this repair? My husband is quite handy. We aren't too confident in the shop to even make them repair it at their expense. Your help and input is greatly appreciated. Joyce Kaack
211. Q. Hey there, if you can help me on this at all I would appreciate it. I have an 85 ranger with a hydraulic clutch. I took the transmission out and put it back in. I went to bleed the system and figured I could do it like a normal hydraulic brake system since it takes the same fluid. The master cylinder will not pump any fluid through the line. My next step is to get a suction bleeder and possibly suck the fluid through the bleed hole? Is this going to work? Or is there a different trick to this I should try. Your advice is much appreciated! Thanks!
212. Q. I have a 1993 Lexus ES300 that has the tachometer needle burned out. I have verified that it is just the needle that has the problem. The dealership says that the part is only available when you buy the instrument cluster (approx. $600.00) I am pretty sure the part was made by Denso, the number on the back of the needle is 3222.Is there any after marker place that would carry such a part without buying the whole cluster? Thanks, Bert
213. Q. I have a 1988 Buick Century which a rusted fuel line from the fuel filter back to the gas tank. How do I go about replacing it? Thanks, Ketan
214. Q. Dear Morph, I have a '91 Honda LX. My problem is I start the car to warm it up, and the engine starts at high idle then slowly returns to a slow idle then revs up to about 1000 rpm's and keeps going up and down like this until I start to drive the car. Recently it has begun doing this even when the engine is warm and I push in the clutch for a stop light. I have put cleaner in the gas tank and a can of cleaner in theintake while the engine is running. This stopped the problem once before but not this time. It seems like a sensor but i don't have a book to know which ones to test. Thank you for any suggestions! W. Smith, New York
215. Q. I installed a Commando RF remote starter in my 2001 Lexus RX300. After it was installed I noticed that the check engine light and VSC light was on. After consulting with Commando I reviewed my installation to make sure I had wired it properly (I did). I then took the car to Lexus and they told me that "Air Fuel Senor and "Neutral Safety Switch tripped the error codes. They cleared the computer and the code went away. I then drove home happy thinking, "testing of the remote started during installation caused the problem. The next day while driving the car the lights came on again. Is there a way I can determine the error and reset the light without bringing the car back to the dealer? The dealer said if I continued to have a problem that it would not be covered under warranty due to the aftermarket device. Any suggestions?
216. Q. I have already asked you a question about my truck and you thought it might be the torque converter, which did seem likely, but since then it has been trying to die every time I try to slow down or coast, so I have to keep giving it gas. I tryed putting it in neutral when I slow down, or come to a stop, thinking that if it was the torque converter locked up it would keep it running, but it still trys to die when I don't give it gas in neutral. I unplugged the O2 sensor, to make it run on the computer default setting, but it didn't do anything. It did seem like the torque converter, because as I am coming to a stop it seems like something will clunk. {maybe the torque converter unlocking?} The main question seem to be that I can't tell if the engine is just bogging down, and then roaring back, or if the torque converter is slipping, or locking up. Would I be able to tell if the torque converter was slipping? Would I smell it burning up? My transmission fluid was a little brownish instead of the normal pink, but it has been a long time between changing. I am now leaning more tward the throttle position sensor, and thats what an auto parts guy thought. He also said something about an idle air sensor. Please offer any advise that you can.
217. Q. I have a 91 cavalier that had a 4 cyl engine in it. I replaced it with an 89 beretta 2.8 mpfi engine. My question is how do i mate the wiring harnesses?
218. Q. I have an 84 Ford Ranger which recently developed a constant drain to the battery. I cannot find the short anywhere. At one time I owned an 85 Ford Mustang which had the same problem and I never found it. I am tired of unpluging my negative cable every night. Have you heard of this as a common problem or what steps do you suggest I take in finding it. I do have a multimeter. Thanks, Adam
219. Q. We own a 1985 Corvette that had been stolen. Our question is how could it have been stolen without the ignition key? Thank you
220. Q. Morph, Was wondering if you could provide some assistance in changing the serpentine belt on a 4.0L 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo? I can't figure out how to release the tension pulley. Thanks a million, RM
221. Q. I own an '89 Sidekick and have recently noticed a loud tick noise when I turn my lights on...but only AFTER it has idled down. I know there is a natural tick of the fuel injector, and even the lifters, but this is VERy apparent, and comes ONLY after the headlights are turned on. I looked inside to see if the injector was working right and every so often there was a stoppage of flow of gas. I failed only the NOx rating which is the level of bad emission that hurts the atmoshere, and I think they left my lights on while they checked it. Alternator problem?? I'm not sure because it is charging fine, at around 14. It drops a little when the lights are turned on and it ticks, but not enough to sneeze at. Injector bad?? Not sure, I put injector cleaner in, no change. Any suggestions would be great. What is the connection between the headlights and the fiel injector tick?? Thanks alot, I am lost on this one. Eric
222. Q. I have a 1969 checv with a 327. i fear it may have jumped timing, it won't run and backfires through the carb. help
223. Q. My '90 CutlassCalais revs up to 2500-3000 appx. rpm's on' warm' startup and warm days. seems like cold/fall/winter temp's. eliminate problem; summer, very prominent. The engine is a Quad 4 and otherwise it runs great at 132,000 miles. The idle air control and vacuum leaks have pretty much been eliminated as problems. This is a sporadic quirk. The car has to be shut off and started sometimes up to 5, 6 plus times for it to settle at normal idle speed .Three top-notch mechanics have tried to resolve problem and can't. Hoping you might...Thanks, Joe Jach,Lawrence, KS.
224. Q. I own a 1985 Honda Prelude with a 1.8 l, dual carb engine. Could you tell me where the pcv valve is located. Thanks.

226. Q. Our 90 camry had a slow running windshield wiper, it started runny very slowly for about 2 weeks, it did not run on the high wiper speed either at this time, we replaced the motor, thinking it was the fault. but the problem persisted. with washer fluid on the glass it ran a bit faster. short of taking the front end apart, what do I do. to correct this problem. I was told that this is not an isolated problem in the Camry. further all the mechanical parts for the Camry wiper housing seems to be behind the fire wall. The dealer will rip us off if we go to them....short of this, is there another alternative. Terence Hopman.
227. Q. I have a 94 Honda Accord Ex -- my drivers window won't go up, but all other 3 work fine. If I push the button, it will go down without any problem, but won't go up. I don't think it could be the motor as the other 3 are working. Could it be the window switch. Is there anything I can check myself before I take it away. When it goes down and I try to put it up you can't hear the motor. thank you
228. Q. I have a 1986 Honda Prelude with fuel injection, and manual transmission. It runs perfectly, accept when I let off the accelerator it dies. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, and dist cap about 8 months ago. It's been idling perfectly unitl this week. HELP... John from Fresno!
229. Q. Hi, I have a 2000 Altima which runs great. The only concern I have is that the air conditioner comes on when I use the defroster. This was meant to get rid of any fog that builds up on the windshield. The only problem is that this is very unhelpful in the winter when I need all the heat I can get in the morning to melt the ice/snow off the windshield. Do you know of any way to keep the a/c off when I use the defroster? thanks.
230. Q. My dodge truck has been acting strangely. It has a 318 with throttle body fuel injection. Take off is fine, but through mid range it seems bogged down, and throttle response is too slow all the way to the floor. When hammered it really roars, if it downshifts, which it doesn't always do. The check engine light is slow to go off, after starting it. It doesn't seem like a transmission problem. Sometimes when taking off it will grabafter a little hesitation. The engine runs smooth, but it does chug some when accelerating. It has 186,000 miles on it, and I have replaced the fuel pump a couple months ago. Seems like a throttle position sensor, or an O2 sensor, but I'm a shadetree mechanic. It has been a great truck, and I would appreciate any help.
231. Q. I have a 94 camaro 3.4 v6 What could be possible causes of hesitation, mainly in the rpm range from2000 to 3500? How could I determine which is the cause? Where is the fuel filter? I just got a K&N filter charger for it what can I hope to gain? I want to get a superchip how much power can I get from one of those? Should I get a low flow Exaust system, How much would that improve the proformance of my car? Thanks Ryan
232. Q. hi, i have a 96 chevy blazer s-10. the fuse for ecm blow every now and then. i took it in to get the electrical system work on and the problem was gone. two days later the problem reaccure. the elctician disconnect a couple of sensor and the ground was still there. the problem occure as sone as you turn the ignition switch. there is no smoking of wires. it sounds like there is a problem in the ignition system but where. please help because we are clueless.
233. Q. 91 Camry 4 cyl. I live in the Republic of Panama and recently, I had an overheat that was severe and unfortunately I did not notice it. The car stalled and I notice that the radiator had a crack on towards the top. Once cooled I opened it and it was basically bone dry, so I filled it and took it to a mechanic. They replaced the radiator and ran the car for over an hour. Everything was perfect. Two days later, the same problem (overheat). This time I noticed it when the temp. gauge started to run at 3 quarters. I stopped the vehicle and after it cooled, checked the water level. Again, it was very low, but only about half way. This time, I also had the water in the reservoir spraying out. It appeared and sounded like the water in the reservoir was actually boiling in there. There is a small hole towards the top of the reservoir that looks like it is there on purpose (it is a perfect circle) and the H2O was spraying out of there with a lot of force into the battery. At any rate, I left the ign. switch on with the fans blowing and after about 2 minutes it all settled down. I took it back to the mechanic and he told me that I should have the thermostat removed. I did that, and when I took it away the temp. gauge actually fluctuated (1/2 way to 3/4) when I was going up an down hills. Now I am driving the vehicle with a couple of gallons of water handy. The radiator/reservoir takes about 1/2 a gallon a day if I only drive it a total of 15 miles. If you are not familiar with where I live the temperature is always in the mid 80's here, with humidity ranging from 75%-95%. FYI...the last thing the mechanics here told me was that I had blown the gaskets in the engine block, and that would need to be fixed. Mind you that they have not done a full inspection they are just "shooting from the hip". Wanting to know if there could be anything else, before I start to drop big money into a car that probably has the same value as the actual work. Thanking you in advance, John
234. Q. I HAVE A 1990 NISSAN PICK-UP WITH A 2.4 LITER MOTOR, I WANT TO REPLACE THE PCV VALVE BUT CANT LOCATE IT. I HAVE THE VALVE SO I CAN SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE BUT IT IS NOT ANYWHERE THE LOCAL MECHANICS TEEL ME. HELP.
235. Q. 1987 Honda Accord DX carburetor settings -- I am rebuilding my carburetor and I need to know the carburetor settings for a 87 honda accord dx. Thank you for your quick reply. D.B
236. Q. 1991 Pontiac Grand Am 2.5L crankshaft force balancer -- I have a 91 Grand Am with a 2.5 L, 4 tech. I replaced the engine counter balance a few months ago. Last week it went out again. The replacement was a used part. Both times the bushing was completely gone on one of the shafts. I would like to replace it with a new assembly. I would like to know if there maybe something causing this to go bad before I fork out the big bucks on a new one. There is 180,000 on it, and it's in good condition otherwise. The GM dealer said that there are a lot of miles on it and I should just replace it. Please Help! Thank you! Kevin
237. Q. I own a 1987 Chevy Beretta and I have a problem. When ever I dont have my headlights on my radio lights work. But, when I turn on my headlights the lights on my radio don't work and the instrument panel lights don't work. I checked the fuses and they are all ok, so I have no idea what the problem is. Please help me. Jason Belak Porter Corners, NY
238. Q. hello, I drive a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan. It has started making a buzzing noiseat the gate each time the I lock or unlock the doors. I am told it is probabaly an actuator. Is this something I can buy and fix at home? Thanks LMC
239. Q. We have a 1998 GMC Savana that has the special policy for the faulty fuel injectors (for 100K miles). This doesn't help much for a service vehicle. There is a problem with the injectors and gas in California (it makes them sticky). Our big problem now is the engine. After driving a 100 mile stretch, theengine completely dies. The panel lights all come on and there is no power steering and no brakes. VERY SCARY!!! H E L P !!!
240. Q. I have a problem that it seems that no one can fix. I hope you can shed some light my situation. I bought a 1991 ford e-150 econoline cargo van with 75,000 miles on it. Two weeks later the trans (e4od) came out. So I paid $1,600 to have it rebuilt. It was fine at first but about a week later it started slamming into gear 1,2 and 2,3 not every shift but occasionaly. So I took it back and had it rebuilt again and now it slams into gear every time. It will slam into gear only if I get on the gas and stay on it. But, before it slams my rpms seem to shoot up for a split second before slamming into gear. But, if I take off slowly it will shift smoothly. I've had the vss,tps repaced. I've had the ford dealership check the computer and the only codes that came up was 327,328 (engine codes) egr codes. I had egr valve replaced and still doing the same thing. The codes read 327=circuit below min. voltage 328= closed valve voltage lower than expected. I know that the e4od is completely electronicly controled. Could 327,328 have anything to do with my problem? The guy who had it before me had the engine flushed and everything had to be unplugged and then plugged back. Could it be a problem with the wiring? Could it be a vacuum problem? DOES my model have a rear differential vss? Is it a big deal to fix my voltage proplem? (327,328). Because of the egr problem I get BAD gas milage and lack of power. 246. Q. 1998 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 4X4 350/auto. intake manifold leak -- I have a 98 Suburban 1500 4x4 with a 350/auto. At 55,000 miles it developed a cooling leak that was determined to be caused by the combination of a bad intake manifold gasket, Dextrol antifreeze, and a plastic intake manifold. What do you recommend as a permanent fix to this problem? The GM dealers deny that this is a chronic problem, but many independants disagree. Jim Laguna Hills, CA
247. Q. 1990 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer loose steering -- Hi, I have a '90 S-10 Blazer 4x4. The question is... The steering appears to be 'loose". I know I may need some tie-rod ends or the like, but there is an adjustment on the top of the steering gear-box. Can this also take some 'play" out of the steering performance? The front end seems to be tight in all other aspects. Thanks in advance, Ric

251. Q. 1987 Dodge Caravan engine smoke -- It looks like you do a great job of answering other peoples questions so I thought I would give it a try. My 1987 Caravan is smoking blue smoke. It doesn't seem to smoke very bad when the van is going down the road. It smokes the worst when it is idling. I checked the pvc valve and it was stuck so I messed with it until it was free and I could hear the ball moving around. That didn't help any. Also the small filter that is under the air filter is very oily. Is there something else I could check to see if it is a minor problem? If the van needs a valve job, could you estimate a price on that? Thanks for the help. Chris in NC.
252. Q. Toyota Camery 93 6cyl over heating -- Hi, I have an over heating problem. I recently had the water pump replaced along with the timing belt. Unfortunately they didn't install the timing belt right the first time. The car wouldn't go over 25 mph. I took the car back and they redid it but returned it to me the same way. The 3rd time they got it right. The same week I noticed the temp gauge reading very high. I returned the car to them once again. They thought it may be the fan. I took it to the dealer and they told me that the fan was fine but suspected that the radiator was the problem. I had them replace the radiator but that had no effect. I again took the car to the repair shop and they agreed to replace the water pump with a Toyota part. Still the same problem, darn thing over heats. I had gas analysis done on the coolant to look for a head gasket problem, the test was negative. I can always tell when the car is going to over heat as my interior heater will suddenly stop putting out hot air. Yes I had the thermostat replaced twice, with Toyota parts. Any ideas??? Thanks Fred
253. Q. No heater for a 1992 toyota camry v6 -- I've changed the water pump and the thermostat and still no heat. Please tell me what could be the problem. I did at one time used some radiator stop leak. Please give me some advice. Thanks Matthew
254. Q. I have a new chevy 350 engine with a holley 600 carb; after I turn the car off and try to re-start it my spark plugs are flooded with gas. No modifications have been made to the carb, so I'm not sure if it would be a bad needle and seat valve or something else. Could you please, please help? Thanks! Chris W. Dallas,Tx.
255. Q. I have a 1994 Nissan Altima with 131,000 miles on it. The car runs very well, and consistently gets around 30 mpg around town. It doesn't burn or leak any oil. I just performed a compression test (warm engine, eight cranks per cylinder), with the following results: Cylinder 1 = 160 psi, Cylinder 2 = 160 psi, Cylinder 3 = 138 psi, Cylinder 4 = 135 psi. The variability from cylinder to cylinder concerns me. The car sees pretty easy use (virtually no stop-and-go traffic), and I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. I would like to get at least 200,000 miles out of the engine. Should I be concerned about the results of the compression test? Thanks. Andy Austin, TX

257. Q. The speedometer on my 1991 Subaru Legacy has become sluggish or is sticking. I think it reads correctly but it may take a change of 5 mph before the needle moves either up or down. Can a lubricant be sprayed into the speedometer and would it likely help this problem. I wondered if spraying from the back of the speedometer might mess up the glass covering. Any ideas? By the way I have taken the cable out and examined it carefully. It seems to be perfect. Stan Rathbone Tennessee, USA. Thanks.
258. Q. On my 97 Ford Explorer, the Check Engine light comes on and will not go off. It has been a couple of days now. I looked at the Owner's Guide for the Explorer, and it says this light "Illuminates when the engine's Emission Control System requires service." Any tips on what to look at. I also have seen (it's been a while now) someone make a light that you connect to the computer plug that gives you a code as to what the problem may be. Any idea how to make one of those and what the different codes mean? Thanks. Josh Crouch Texas

260. Q. 1994 Buick Park Avenue--My problem is the cruise control, when I set it it will only stay on for about 30 to 60 seconds and then kicks off. I have checked and adjusted the switches on the brake pedal and it worked for a short time but has since started doing the same thing over again, (shuting itself off). Could you give me any ideas as to what the problem my be? Is this hooked up to a computer chip, or is there another area I could check for the cause of this problem. Are there any other on line sites that I could go to to find this out? Thank you.
261. Q.1999 Dodge Ram--I disconnected the negitive battery cable on my truck to install a set of factory road lights. 264. Q. It is Christmas Eve and no one is working. We are on the road traveling and our heat is not working. I have changed the heater control valve and the thermostat. The hoses going into the firewall are hot. I am not sure where to check on the heater core to determine if any doors or flaps are not opening correctly. 266. Q. Hi, my name is Kelly and I have a 1990 full size Bronco and I was wondering how to get to the heater core. I know it's under the dashboard on the passenger side, but how do I get to it? I was going to try to do it myself, but there were no directions in the box! If it doesn't sound like too much work, I might try attempting it. I would really like some advice. thankyou!
267. Q. I have a 1985 Mustang with a 302 HO engine. My question pertains to a problem I am having with the car while driving. The car will start surging and backfiring without notice. It usually does it after a sustained cruise, but is not limited to that. I have changed out my ignition system hoping that would take care of the problem. It didn't work! Can you help me with this troubleshooting. Thank You, Jim Courson Winston-Salem, NC coursonj@avsales.com

269. Q. Hi Morph, I have a 1989 Chevy Corsica and the other day the battery died. I replaced the battery (which have side posts) and since doing this, my car idles fast to slow at stop lights. 270. Q. Dear Morph, I could sure use some assistance on removing and replacing my heater core in the 87 Gimmy. I'm ready to tackle the work, I just want to make sure I'm going in the right direction.Thanks.
271. Q. Morph, I own a 1997 Chevy blazer 4x4,and I keep hearing a constant hum type noise coming from the front end. My brother seems to think it is the right front wheel bearings. He said this is a sealed unit. I start hearing it around 40mph and above. Is there any way to prove or troubleshoot what I'mhearing. And could it be something else. The noise seems to dissipate when I go into a right hand curve or turn. thanks Jim
272. Q. Hi. This is Will. I have a 1992 Honda accord EX. Suddenly, whenever I press the brakes to slow down while driving the lights to the radio, dashboard, and headlights flicker. Also, I noticed that when I crank the car, with the lights and radio off, I can hear something coming from the passenger side under the dashboard as if a relay is trying to connect. This is when I attempt to push the breaks. The battery seems fine and I think the alternator is okay. What should I do?
273. Q. I have a 98 blazer 4x4, and every time I engage the push button 4x4 the fuse under the hood blows. What could cause this?
274. Q. Do you have any idea as how the thermostat goes on a ford aerostar,1994/95
275. Q. I have a 91 lumina 3.1L with over 160,000 miles. It still runs great but the transmission is acting shady. First of all, it started by sometimes when I stop at a red light and when I hit the gas it revs my engine and my car doesn't move. It only happens when in OD. Then, the reverse wouldn't work at times. I would have to shift to D, 1, or 2 and then back to R or back to Park, until it worked. Now it won't shift into any gears. the shifter moves smoothly but does not make the noise it usually made when it shifts gears. If I keep messing with it I can get it to work, until I put it into park. I don't want to give up on this car, but if it is too expensive, it's not worth keeping. I should also add that I'm from michigan and we just got a foot of snow. could it be the cold weather?
276. Q. I own a 1989 GMC 3/4 ton. It has a 350 and five speed transimission. when I accelerate hard I feel a jerking almost like it's lugging. What could this be?
277. Q. Several times since I purchased my ford f-150 my clutch won't work when the outside temperature gets to around zero degrees. The clutch pedal goes to the floor and stays and you can't get the transmission to go into gear. I have called several local dealers and their machanics have never heard of this. The last one I called said it sounded like there was moisture in the clutch and it was frozen. Does this sound correct or do I have another problem with my clutch? Any help would be appreciated.
278. Q. Hi, my name is Kevin from Edmonton. Alberta, Canada. I have a 1993 Dodge Caravan 3.0L. Occasionally when going up a slight incline I can feel a vibration or shuddering coming from the front end. This only happens periodically but I am wondering if this may be the beginning of transmission problems. I would like an opinion before I go to the dealer. Thanks for your great site!
279. Q. I have a 1993 Dodge Caravan and the transmission is slipping. It get all the gears but when it get hot it start to slip. Is there any way to adjust it or what should I do.
280. Q. I need a vaccum line diagram for a 1985 chevy s-10 pickup 4wd 2.8 v-6 5 speed. Thanks.
281. Q. I have a 97 Dodge Ram pickup with a 8 cylinder engine (5.0 L) and I recently had the check engine light come on. I read in the manual that you can tell what the problem is by turning the key on-off-on-off-on and reading the flashing lights. I did this and got code "35" which told me that there is a radiator fan relay fault. I brought the truck to the dealership to get fixed and they told me that the truck was having misfires on all 8 cylinders and would require new plugs, new wires, a new distributor, and a throttle body cleaning. Are these problems related somehow? If so, how? John
282. Q. I GET A "MAINT REQD" LIGHT ON MY DASHBOARD MSG CENTER, BUT NO COMPUTER CODES TO IDENTIFY THE REQUIRED MAINTENCE. ANY IDEAS TO HELP? THANKS,,,,,
283. Q. We have a 1993 Cavalier station wagon with a V6, automatic and ABS that has an intermittent stalling problem. While you are driving at times as you come to a stop the engine will be idling real fast, then the idle will jump up and down and the motor will stall. The car starts right back up and is OK after that. If you quickly put the car in neutral when this starts to happen, bump the gas pedal then wait a second and then put it back in gear the car reverts to normal operation. Simply putting it in neutral and then back into gear without bumping the gas pedal causes the car to instantly stall. It's been to the dealer who replaced the brain and the O2 sensor. This did not cure the problem and I'm not real willing to go for more " lets plug another item in and see if this fixes it " repairs. They said they had no idea of what was wrong and it could be any one of the 20 plus sensors and that they cost about $100 each plus labor. So they replaced the 2 items they felt sure would be most likely to be at fault. This is the only real problem with the car at 89,000 miles and I'd like to keep it at least another year if possible.
284. Q. I have a 1996 S10 Blazer with a 4.3 engine, AC, automatic transmission with push button 4WD. I need to replace the 4WD module. What is the proper way to do it? Please answer as soon as possible. Thank You.
285. Q. Hi i ahve 2000 accord (4cyl) with 5000 miles on it. it has auto transmission and it gives a kind of sound (in engine region) when i shift the knob from D4 to N to R. But there won't be any sound when shifting from R to P. Or from N to d4 to d2 to d1. The sound comes only when it goes from D4 to R (via N)first time. It won't be there when shifting from R to N and N to R. To have sound i have to drive a little bit by keeping in D4 and then shift from D4 to R via N. Also the vehicle is giving low milage 17/G. I travel 3 miles one way to my work place in city. Is this low milage related to sound when shifting transmission knob from D4 to R via N. Thanks in advance Ramana
286. Q. Greetings ! Sometime ago I read a small informational article about a homemade cleaning solution to improve the workings of rear window defosters. I thought the source was a Minnesota paper but I am not certain if that is accurate. This remedy for automotive rear window defrosters not fully working or working slowly was offered as an alternative to expensive repair shop repairs. I tried it on our 1987 oldsmobile and it worked great! Now that I am having problems with our 1994 GMC Truck I am not able to locate the article. It seems to me the mixture included alcohol ?,or vinegar?, and baking soda or Baking Powder? possibly salt: all readily available home products that when mixed together and used to clean window defoggers, improved the conductivity of these older heating lines. Any help or suggestions you are able to provide would be greatly appeciated! Thank You! Rich Nyklewicz, Jr.
287. Q. I drive a 2000 RX300. i have done extensive searching on the internet, but to no avail. I want to avoid taking my RX to the dealer every time I need to change the oil (partly becasue they will run me around $75, plus the nearest dealership is 2 hours away from me) and so i would like to do it myself. The oil filter is between the radiator and teh engine (or so Ive heard) and there is no space to get the filter out. Do you have any ideas on how to change the filter??? Help!! Matthew Frank
288. Q. I have a 1995 chevrolet Corsica With a 3.1 V6. I bought it used in '98. When I bought it ,the salesman didn't tell me that it had D.R.L.'s. This function has never worked and i am wondering why. I would like to get the D.R.L.'s working because I like the feature. I also didn't recieve an owners manual with this car. I checked the high beam bulb(that is where the D.R.L. lights come from) and the bulb is a Sylvania. I hope that the original owner just put the wrong type of bulb! PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU D.L.
289. Q. 82 Civic Carb -- the car idles at 1500 RPM. I attempted to adjust this but now there is fuel just pouring into the carb, the car starts for a brief minute and dies. It runs very rough now. My questions is what are the adjustment settings suppose to be set at. Also, what are those (2) big screws on top of the carb for suppose to be set at. Thanks
290. Q. I recently had an alternator replaced along with the battery. I also had a hose blow on my coolent system. This all happened on the same day which is why I am a little puzzled at what may be the cause of the rough idling and stalling when stopped at lights etc. When the hose blew I had to keep driving it by constantly adding a gallon of water every 10 miles (that's all it would take is another gallon, the system has a 3 gallon capacity) it seems to run fine when I get it up to normal operating speeds. I also heard a clicking from one of the cylinders. I took the cover off to check the rocker arms and they were fine and the clicking seemed to be coming from the third cylinder in from the left as you face the car. The ticking was there before all these things happened but I didn't have the stalling or rough idling problem. The rough idling problem sounds like it's a piston misfiring terribly. I checked to see if the cylinder I mentioned was getting spark by pulling the spark plug wire out and holding it close to the plug (a mistake I might add) and there seemed to be plenty of spark, let me tell you, there was plenty of spark :-O! So, do you think I burnt a valve by running it too hot or did the mechanic leave something loose when putting in the alternator and battery? I did find a couple of goof ups when I looked under the hood in that there was a disconnected hose, small hose, don't know what it is, it runs from the engine to under the coolent overflow tank to where I don't know. Help, I've spent enough on this car and need to keep it to a minimum. Thanks.
291. Q. Can you tell me if the heater core comes out through the firewall, or from under the dash? The Haynes Manual says from under the dash, but I can't figure out how!?
292. 293. Q. Hello, I have a 1989 Toyota Camry 4 door with over 100,000 miles on it. Its been a great car, however the past year, it has been dying/stalling on me 2 different ways. One way is when I'm driving it and I get to a shopping center, go in for an hour, come back out and the car is totally dead! But yet the battery seems fine, the lights work, etc. The other way is when I am actually driving the car and I step on the gas and it dies/stalls right in an intersection or as I'm going towards a stop sign/light. I have had it hooked up to diagnostic machines, replaced the battery, checked the ignition, used better gas, driven it in severe cold and hot weather and nobody knows whats wrong with it! I have taken it to dealership mechanics and "toyota specialists" and they can't find anything wrong. I can not afford another vehicle, but I also don't want it to nickle and dime me to death. Any suggestions?? Everyone I have talked to says they have never heard of a Camry doing this before. PLEASE write me back. Thank you. Gina Bump Colorado Springs, CO
294. Q. Hello ,,My name is Keith ,,, I have a 87 ford bronco and the oil pump went out on it and I'm having a terrible time tryng to get the oil pan off to get to it ,,,,is there a way to get the pan off without having to pull the transmission or motor out ,,,, Thanks
295. Q. Please Help!!! I own a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria with a 302 FI that has a serious engine sludge problem. I do a mix of city/highway driving (mostly highway).. have 110K miles.. doesn't burn any oil, but sludges up quite a bit. I use a 10-30w with a cc/cd additive, plus I've been using an extra detergent in past 10K miles. A mechanic friend told me ford issued a service bulletin for this problem in the late 1980's, but my neighborhood ford dealer says he can't find any. The problem is so bad that the oil spurts into the air cleaner area. I frequently change the pvc valve, oil filters, air cleaners, etc.. and keep the engine in top tune. Car has no rust and rides like a dream, but the oil problem (and a drop in fuel mileage) has me concerned. Don Karlson
296. Q. My problem is on a '85 Camaro, 305 TPI. It's my friends car and I can't figure out what is wrong with it. The problem started out of the blue. The car runs very rough, it pulsates like someone is tapping the gas.We thought the fuel filter was bad, but the check engine like blinks in cue with the engine pulsating. The computer tester we used showed no trouble codes so we figured the problem was mechanical. We tested the fuel pressure and it was fine. There is also a small tick (sounds like a light spark from a battery) but we couldn't find it. Would a short in plug wires cause the engine trouble? The day before, had alsorained quite a bit, would moisture in the distributor cause this? Thanks Andy!
297. Q. I have a 1991 Olds Cutlass Calais, quad 4. What is the ohm load when testing fuel injectors? Car starts fine, runs rough, but when you drive it, there's no acceleration. Engine seems to stop when you push on thegas. When you let off, it goes back to idle.
298. Q. Hello. I am having problems with the drivers side window in my 95 Corsica. I have noticed from time to time that the switch does stick. Well today when I put the window down it wouldn't go back up. Is it the switch I need to replace? Or the motor for the window? All the other windows work fine. If the switch was out wouldn't all the windows refuse to work? It has rained recently. Would moisture cause the window to stick in the down position? It seems rather silly to me, however, someone did suggest that something inside the door could have gotten wet which in turn shorted the electrical wiring going to that particular window to short out. Any suggestions as to how I replace it or what I should do is welcome. I don't like the idea of having the drivers window down. It seems rather silly to lock the car up when one window is invitingly open. Thank you for your help. NJ
299. Q. I have a 1989 Ford Ranger. It has an automatic trans.. When it shifts from first to second it kinda klunks into gear second to third and third to fourth are all fine. Could you give me some advise on a solution. Thanks. Don Hansen Elk Grove, IL
300. Q. I have a 94 Buick Century V6 with 90,000 miles. I have a problem with front windows not wanting to go back up without waiting a while after pressing button. They will only go up a little bit at a time, then I have to wait a couple minutes.ENGLEWOOD FL
301. Q. I have a 1994 Toyota Camry. The driver side power window does not work. I have determined that it is getting power when the switch is pressed by measuring the power with a mulitmeter. I eventually took the regulator casing off and cleaned out what appeared to be metal dust. I put the casing back on and the window worked for a while. It stopped working and I again just took the casing off the regulator and put it back on. The window worked again. I am unsure what is exactly wrong and why it stops working. Any ideas? Stephen Herlick
302. Q. I've got a 95 Chevy Cavalier with 107,000 miles. It surges at higher speeds. The engine light blinks intermittently.
303. Q. What is the best way to check tire pressure?
304. Q. I have a 90 Beretta Gtz with a 2.3 liter MPI engine and a 5 speed trans and I have problem. It is giving me a code 35 for an idle air control valve. I have replaced the valve and reset the code. the instructions with the valve said drive the vehicle to get it past 40 and the ECM would reset the valve. Well it didn't. It idles real fast like 3,500 to 4,000. I can bring it down a little by loading the motor with the lights and A/C, but what is the problem, help please....
305. Q. I have a 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier 3.1 V-6. I need to replace the "coolant fan relay switch". I have looked for the manual for my car and can't find it, not even at NAPA or Chevrolet. I even went on the internet & the internet for our local library. I just want to see a diagram of where this part is located on my car. The part is cheap, and I do not want to pay out half my paycheck to have it replaced. Please advise! Thank You, Kathy Tampa, Florida
306. Q. What is the easiest way to remove and install a serpintine belt on a 1989 Chevy Beretta. My dad and I replaced the alternator a few years ago, but we a very diffucult time getting the tensioner in the proper place. Just a few months ago the alternator went out again and I had a shop install a new one at a 40.00 dollar charge. In the future I would like to be able to do this my self. Thank you.
307. Q. My girlfriend drives an 1985 Crown Victoria 302 v-8. Her two passenger side power windows do not go down. If you push the switch on the driver's door the motor runs but the window does not go down. Also that same window on the passenger side has a switch to operate the window but it doesn't seem to work. The same problem with the Rear passenger side window. The motor runs if you use the switch on the drivers door, but the window does not go down and the switch on that passenger side door also doesn't work. How do I remedy this problem. I think the gears for the motor and the gear that rasies the window are not aligned properly. And as for the switches are they bad or is it a wiring problem. Because the widow motors still run just not when you try to use the switch on the corresponding door. Also, the power lock on the front passenger side doesn't seem to be working. If you hit the switch it operates the other doors but not its own. It doesn't even try to look or unlock the door.Thank you
308. Q. I drive a 1989 Chevy Beretta 2.8L MFI V-6 with 164k miles. It has been idleing very roughly but only when the car is in drive. It seems to be fine as long as the idle is over about 1200RPM. It only idles roughly when it you are are in drive, but not moving like when you are sitting waiting for a light. It isn't rough when you are driving at a normal speed though. Thank you for your help I greatly appreciate it.
309. Q. I'm having trouble locating a source for a DRBII code scanner. I want to be able to read the transaxle codes etc. on a '90 Voyager with a A-604 transaxle. Thanks and so it goes Paul.
310. Q. I have an 89 Corsica 2.8 litre. The starter pinion does not disengage from flywheel. Shimming doesn't work. Canadian Tire says its the right starter. When you loosen the bolts, the pinion snaps back in. Help, please. Cindy.
311. Q. My '87 Escort 1.9L FI simply stopped running. No misses, just stopped. No current to the distributor. We replaced the ignition control module and the coil. What should I check next?
312. Q. I am having a heck of a time trying to get a pitman arm off on my D50 Ram pickup. I have the puller and I am torqueing down on it heavy and it won't move. I am using a breaker bar with a 4 foot cheater bar and still can't get it to move. I am afraid something is going to break. This is the first time I have removed a pitman arm and I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or if this is normal. I would apreciate any suggestions.
313. Q. I have a 1993 Dodge Caravan and occasionally hear a sound like a quiet cell phone ringing inside the van. The sound seems to move around inside the vehicle but we can't pinpoint where it is coming from. Any ideas??
314. Q. My son's car failed DEQ emissions test yesterday. They told him the NOX emmision was too high. Could this be a simple carburator adjustment to richen up the mixture or does the EGR valve have to be replaced? I don't have a manual yet ( but soon) and I am guessing that the EGR valve is on top of the intake manfold between the carb and the head.
315. Q. How do you remove the heater core on a 1990 Full-size(G20) Chevy Van? -Mark
316. Q. My '93 Honda civic (62K miles) has developed a creaking noise when the clutch pedal is pushed in and out. The noise seems to be coming from under the engine near the transmission. The pedal travel feels sticky, and these symptoms worsen when driving in rain. The performance of the clutch itself is fine ( no slipping or popping out of gear, etc.). I would greatly appreciate any info as to what this may be. Thanks.
317. Q. 1) I own a 1991 Toyota Corolla. This weekend I noticed that the Digital Clock started to act up. It would not work then suddenly 12:OO shows, then stop working again (display would go out) then it would come back again after a while. I checked the fuse for it and it seems to be fine. I think it's a 'contact' problem, but where should I look. 2) Also, since yesterday, whenever I need to shift from the "P" position to "R" or other gears, I need to press/hit the SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE button on my car. After that I can shift to other gears with no problem. But whenever I put it back on "P" and release the Lock Release Button on the Automatic Transmission selector level, I need to press the SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE again the next time I have to shift it out of "P". Is this aserious problem?
318. Q. I just replaced the passenger side window motor with an aftermarket rebuilt motor. The problem I'm having is that when I run the motor down itseems to go too far, and won't return-it just torques the motor, and locks up. I took it apart,to get it to a position I could make it work, and had the same results a second time. I could not see any obstructions, even though the replacement hardware was nuts and bolts, as opposed to pop-rivets. I do think it might have something to do with the way it was disassembled, as in the instructions (as vague as they were regarding exactly which body style I had- the instructions were very generic) it suggested drilling a hole through the backplate and installing a bolt into this hole and into the sector gear. I wasn't sure about this and separated the motor from the sector gear while it was still in the door cavity, causing a spring to unravel inside the door. I managed to return everything as I thought it should be, but maybe not, huh? Got any suggestions? Much appreciated!!!!!
319. Q. I HAVE A 91 CAMARO Z28, 305 TPI, COMPLETE CAR (ROLLED) THAT I WANT TO SWAP THE DRIVE TRAIN INTO A STREET ROD. IS THERE A SHORT CUT AS FAR AS THE COMPUTER WIRING, SO THAT I DON'T HAVE ALOT OF WIRES TO RELOCATE? ANY LEADS, INFO IF YOU HAVE, THANKS. KAREN
320. Q. My '99 Corvette has the Active Handling System option. In the hot Texas summers, the "Service Active Handling" warning light comes on and the system does not operate. In the cooler weather months the warning light never comes on. My dealership's service dept. has replaced system modules 4 times now and the problem still continues. Once, wiring under the console was replaced. I have heard of other C5 Corvette owners having this problem and that it is heat related (not properly insulated?), but definitely fixable. I just can't find anyone having direct knowledge of the problem and how to repair. Can you please help? Thank you. Mert
321. Q. I have a 1999 Lexus RX300 with 34,000 miles. I have changed the oil 5 times in the last 34,000 miles. Last week it started smoking out the tail pipe when you started the vehicle. I took it to the dealership and they advised it looked like the car had never had the oil changed, as there was so much sludge under the valve covers. Have you ever heard of this problem? I would appreciate your reply.
322. Q. My '96 Ford Taurus sedan has been gently used with only a bit over 23000 miles on it. I have kept up on maintenance, and it has performed well. With the exception of a coolant recall repair made on all models of this year make, I have not had to have any repairs made, thus far. Just this week, I turned it on and found that it would not shift into gear. It simply glided smoothly over the shift positions and would not lock in place. I checked the fluid levels (including trans. fluid), and they are fine. The engine readily starts and runs great. Could this be a solenoid problem or could the gear shift linkage be out of adjustment. Would repairs be costly or are they readily done at home with the proper manual. I am prepared to take it in, if advised, but would like to have an idea of the possibilities, first, to be well-informed and to avoid any possibility of getting taken advantage of. (Also, could a clogged transmission filter cause this, as well??) Thanks! Dawn G.
323. Q. I have an 87 Chevy 2.8L which reads 110-115psi on all cylinders, no anti freeze in oil, the pressure is too much for the new pvc valve to keep up with. The oily vapor from valve cover line to air filter is choking up the air filter. Could this be a blown head gasket venting to the case some how?
324. Q. My 1993 Nissan Altima is stuck in Park and the gear shift for the auto trans won't budge. Motor runs fine and all of the real light bulbs are working. The dealer I spoke to at 9 pm tonight says there is no emergency release on this year Altima. If I could get it released I could drive it to the nearest dealer. Any ideas? --- Steve Alvarado
325. Q. My car has a strait 4 engine and a manual trans. My problem occurs whenever I go arround a left turn in first gear. What happens is the car will lurch, and the engine will even die on occasion. The strange thing is I only have this problem arround left turns and it is only in first gear. Never does it happen on right turns or strait lines! Usually my engine will start right up again but sometimes it will start for only a second then go dead again over and over until it will not start period (I have had this occur twice since I noticed the problem a couple weeks ago and both times were in restaurant drive-thru's). But if I let the car sit for half an hour or so it will start up again just fine and I can drive away. I have already replaced the spark plugs and rotor cap and put an additive in my gas tank to clean the fuel injector of carbon, but all this did no good. I will probably need to take the car into a shop, but I wanted your advice first on what I am up against. Thank you! Justin Horrell
326. Q. HELP!! ....Have a problem that i can't seem to resolve...It's a '85 toyota van that seems to run fine until you put it in Drive (automatic)...when put into Drive the rpms drop real low, the engine "chugs", while chugging the rpms go up and down and eventually it stalls. It seems to run fine in park and neutral, also seems to run fine in Reverse, nice and smooth no missing or "chugging". I have noticed that when i increase the rpms to 2k and hold it at 2k for about 2 minutes, the "check engine" light comes on. As soon as i let go of the pedal the light goes out. THINGS I HAVE DONE: cleaned throttle body with spray cleaner>replaced air filter>replaced fuel filter>checked air gap...checked pick-up coil...checked coil (all seemed good)>replaced cap and rotor>checked plugs...they seem to have a dark tan to gray color so cleaned>and regapped and re-installed>retimed>checked as many vacuum lines as i could see in the engine compartment>changed tranny fluid and added Motor-Up tranny fix>changed oil and oil filter. After all this it seems to be a little better and seems to beintermitant...i have had it run fine in Drive only to start chugging and stall out again...it seems to be intermitant when it's at normal operating temp....when cold it is only chugging in Drive. Several months ago i did a head gasket job on this van, which led to re-ringing and lapping the valves. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Thanks in advance. John
327. Q. 1985 Toyota Van engine problem - Part 2. One thing though....if the oxygen sensor were bad would that be the cause of the chugging and stalling in drive but not in any other gear position? The exhaust does seem to have a nasty odor (not sure how to discribe it) I don't recall ever changing the oxygen sensor and the vehicle has about 178K miles on it. John
328. Q. Dear Morph, I have a 1980 GMC pickup truck six cylinder auto. withy 71000 miles on it . It's a nice truck, but when I back up on a grade, I get a clanging sound as if the universal joints were ready to come out. I removed the drive shaft the ujoints were in good cond. How can I do a simple test to determine as to whether the clanging noise is the result of a transmision problem or a rear-end problem. In forward driving the transmission seems to operate quite well. Thanks. Marvin
329. Q. Help! Where is the relay that controls the A/C compressor clutch on a 1998 Ford Escort? I think it may need replacing because my compressor/clutch is not engaging. All other electrical components, i.e. fuses, wiring are ok. Thanks. J.M.
330. Q. My 1994 Grand Am surges while I am driving on the highway. The mechanic put the scope on the motor and found no problems. Is the surging caused by the tansmission, fuel injector or something else? When driving at speeds less than 40 miles per hour you don't notice the problem.
331. Q. I have been experiencing a very rough idle on this truck (97 Chevy Silverado V8 Vortec) when the A/C compressor is running. There is still some evidence of a rough idle when the A/C is not on. I have had two different mechanics check this out and they can find nothing out of the ordinary (i.e., vacuum leaks, etc)The SES light came on a couple of weeks ago, but the mechanic seemed to think it was a false code. He didn't give me the code number but said the code indicated the engine was idling too high, but when the code set I was going 43 MPH. I have had numerous small problems with this truck and would like to sell, but want to correct any problems before doing so. Any suggestions you could give me as to the source of the rough idle would be appreciated. Thanks Bham AL
332. Q. My 91 Ford Mustang with an automatic overdrive transmission recently developed a problem during a long road trip. The speedometer stopped working and the overdrive no longer engages. I checked the EEC for trouble codes and the code I received was that no information was being received from the vehicle speed sensor. Is it more likely that the transmission is broken and not turning the speed cable or could it be the vehicle speed sensor causing the EEC not to allow the transmission to shift into overdrive? Please give me your thoughts. Thank you. Ken Nettlebeck
333. Q. Hi, I have a 93 Buick century with about 40,000 miles on it. All of a sudden the high mount brake light stays on all the time, even if the engine is off and I'm out of the car. The regular brake lights are off, only the high mount ones stay on (there are 2 bulbs). Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Arthur Schwartz
334. Q. Hey. I have a '91 Beretta with the 3.1 V6 engine and started having problems with the interior fan last year. I can turn the fan on high and only a trickle of air comes out of the vents. The only setting that blows any air is the max setting for full air conditioner. It sounds like the fan is working but is blowing the air to who knows where. My friend has a Z24 and has the same problem. Any ideas please before it gets too cold in Canada. Thanks. Rick
335. Q. Morph - I have been searching around for some information regarding transmissions for Chevy Suburbans. I have a 1998 Suburban 1500 (2wd) with 45K miles. The transmission has 'internal problems' according to the dealer. It just stopped operating the other day after the engine exhibited some strange behaviour. With the car in gear, Over Drive, starting out was good. At about 15 miles per hour, the acceleration would pause to almost nothing, then the engine would rev up to about 5000 rpm and kick ahead to the next gear. This was consistent. After pulling over and turning the ignition off, the truck would not re-start. All fluid levels were normal. It would not restart due to the battery being dead (side issue) - but the symptoms were of a transmission problem and the mechanic agreed after replacing the battery. He recommended a new transmission. It would have ended up being just as expensive to re-build the current transmission. Have you heard of chevy (GM) transmissions giving out at 45K miles? We bought the truck new and have not done any towing with it nor any unusual driving with it. Any information would be very helpful. The dealer is not being as up-front with information. Thanks!
336. Q. I picked up an 89 Cavalier Z24 for my son for his 16th birthday. We replaced the engine with an 89 Corsica. We got it running, drove down the street and it stalled. We tested the starter (which was new) and it was dead. When we put in the 2nd starter, the starter started to smoke. We took it back to Canadian Tire, it tested OK (they replaced it anyway). Before we put in the new one and burn it - help.
337. Q. 1991 sable gs 96,000 automatic. When driving, sounds like "clicking", or sometimes the handle of a butterknife tapping. Can "feel" it on feet when in the passenger seat. Checked engine, nothing loose, swinging or banging. brakes good, trans (auto) just overhauled, new enging mounts and sub frame bushings. also noticed that engine check light comes on. car runs good otherwise. any ideas. Thank you very much sincerely, al (itheajman@cs.com)
338. Q. 96 Ford Aerostar Electrical Problem: I've yet to take this problem to my dealer but will in a few days, problem is this. About 2 weeks ago, I lost all accessory power. There was a blown fuse, I replaced the fuse and some of the accessories came on for a while and some didn't. Currently, at any given time, the radio will come back on, but not the clock on the radio, the speedometer doesn't work (digital), the interior lights don't, but the dashboard lights do come on. What is interesting is that back in February, the dealer replaced the Accessory Power Feed Circuit per the recall as I was also getting another part replaced. Could the jumper harness they installed be the problem? (http://www.autoweb.com/recalls/displayinfo.htm?pageNum=2&id=4782&makestr=Ford) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Don Engle, Westminster, Colorado, USA.
339. Q. I've got a 91 Ford E150 5.0L V-8. Replaced serpintine belt and idler tension pulley. Everything else seems to be perfect, but the noise is very annoying. Could it be the crankshaft pulley? It seems to run on an angle around the crankshaft. ccummane@hotmail.com Michigan thanks
340. Q. Looking for information, new to web having trouble finding my way around. I am trying to find out if other people owning rangers have had any problems with the front wheels, spindles, ect. Owned ranger for 1 year and 2 days, driving about 40mph, front spindle broke tire came off caused accident that totaled the vehicle. I have been trying to find a web site that list recalls on vehicles or a discussion board where I can find others who have had similar problems. Any help you can give me - just point direction.
341. Q. One morning, I can't shift the selector lever from "P" range to other ranges. It is a 89' Toyota Camery, auto. Then I found a "shift lock override" button in the shift pattern, and I pushed it and I could shift the selector. After that, everytime I start the car, I have to push the button to shift the selector. Is it normal or needs repair? I checked the mannul, it doesn't say anything about that. I have driven over 500 miles after that, and I didn't find any thing wrong. Does anybody know about that? Thanks! Jiping Zhang
342. Q. I took my 1991 lincoln continental in for airconditioning repair (replaced condensor unit) and had them do a complete service check including checking the computer for any problems. None were found. My car was running smooth and everything was working when I took it in for the air conditioning repair. When I took the car home from the repair shop, the check engine light would come on but nothing seemed to be wrong. A few days later, the car began to run hot especially when running the air condtioner and I began to loose some radiator dope. So I called the repair shop and they said to bring it in so I did. I waited while they tried to find out what was wrong, and in about 15 minutes told me it was the headgasket going out. so, I said to repair it. I left my car and three days later they said it was done so I went and paid and picked it up. When I left the repair shop, my car's gauges were not working, ie. the average miles per gallon was reading 14.5 then as I drove it it dropped to 9.5, the other gauges were reading off also. There was a lug in the engine when I accerated that was not there before. I drove about one mile and the check engine light came on the car began over heating and the engine began a loud knocking that got worse when I accelerated . I stopped the car and opened the hood and to my amazement, the upper intake manifold was changed (this was not broke and does not wear out and I was not charged for the replacement) I had a special ordered one that came out when the car was new (silver with black lettering, I believe it was sandblasted to make it look more sporty or fancy)The one that was on my car was made in 1995 as replacement for the original according to the engineering # and it was all black with silver lettering. I took the car back immediately and the repairman said that he didn't know what was wrong nor did he change the intake. When we opened the hood at the repairshop, I noted that there were still parts of my car loose under the hood and not put back (bolts, nuts, dip stick for the transmission, bracket, clamps). The supervisor came over and said that they would make it right and that he would check part # to make sure that all of the parts belonged on the engine. I had an original engine from the manifacturer. He found that the intake was for a 3.8L V-6 but was made in 1995 not in 1991. He says he can't find any place where the intake was silver. I investigated this my self and found the original part # for the original silver intake and I also have found through used car part dealers others that match my original intake. Now I do not know what to do, they still have not told me what is wrong with my engine and it has been two weeks. They did give me a new car to use at my leisure but it is not my car not does it drive as nice. I do not know what I should do. I do not want to pay for anymore repairs since the car came out worse than when it went in. Any ideas on how I can find out what should happen in this case? and should they replace my engine at no charge if it needs extensive repairs? Did changing the intake cause the problems or did they not solve the problem by changing the headgasket? Thanks for your help.
343. Q. I just wanted to ask a simple question. If I put a 3" body lift on my full size 89 Blazer, will I have to take the linkage off and weld it? Some people say yes, some say no--- what do you say?
344. Q. We have a 1991 Olds Ceira 3.3L V6 with a small 234A leak in the evaporator. It needs to be filled twice per year. Too expensive to repair. I noticed a stop leak type product in my local parts store. No one I have asked has any experience with the air conditioner leak seal products. Do you? The air conditioner has been modified for 234A.
345. Q. My sister purchased a used 1996 Ford Explorer. She has since had several problems with the rear end. We have been told that there have been problems nationwide with the V8's and the rear end. She is upside down in this vehicle and really cant afford to put a new rear end in this vehicle. It only has about 80,000 miles on it. Can you tell me if the rumors of problems are true and if so...where to look for help. No one seems to have answers to questions when they are negative in nature. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any assistance- Lilcraftygirl
346. Q. My 1991 Dodge Grand Caravan (3.3L, multiple port injection) has poor idle, hesitates and sometimes stumbles when I try to accelerate. In addition, if I try to "floor it" there is a small backfire, as opposed to a loud bang. The check engine light does not come on.
1. The car dealer mechanic said, " #2 circuit not working. It needs a new computer and tune-up". New computer, spark plugs, new ignition wires, air filter, pcv valve were installed. VAN IS STILL THE SAME.
2. The mechanic said problem is the fuel injectors and maybe the fuel rail. All 6 injectors were checked, cleaned and rechecked. Van drove very good for about 15-20 minutes then the original problem returned gradually.
3. The mechanic said problem was fuel rail and maybe the fuel pump. New fuel rail, fuel pump and fuel filter installed. While this work was being done, the original catalytic converter and muffler were replaced as well. Van drove ok (not very good) for a little while, then back to the original problem. HELP!
347. Q. The engine light in our '95 Nissna Altima came on last night. Everything seems fine though. The engine is not running hot, fluids are full, gears are shifting fine, the fan is working properly and there are no abnormal noises. The car has 69,290 miles. Unfortunately we do not have an owners manual to tell us what this means. Is this a routine occurrence for this car to notify us of maintenance? Please reply ASAP. We do not want to continue driving if there is a possibility of a major problem. Thank you. Cindy
348. Q. I have a 1994 Ford Escort Wagon, 1.9L, that will not start when it is very hot outside, 90 degrees or more, and the windows are up. It acts as if it is not getting either fuel or spark. When the windows are rolled down and the car is allowed to air out, and thus cool down, it starts and runs fine. Any suggestions?
349. Q. I have a Ford Taurus 93. The mileage is up to 108000 (HWY mileage). Recently, I found its accelerating performance becomes very poor. It often takes 1 minute to increase the speed from 0-55 MPH. The gas peddle becomes very heavy and the response is slow, especially on the uphill road, it even cannot keep 35 MPH even if I pressed it firmly. And once I add more strength on my foot in the low speed, I can feel the car stopped on one point like making "deep breath" then go ahead. I just replaced the auto transmission fluid two weeks ago. And my car is in well maintenance condition for a long time. The engine oil and coolant level are OK. Would you please diagnose the problem and give me some service suggestion? Thanks so much. Yijun Zhang
350. Q. Dear Morph, I have a '98 Bounder on Ford chassis. Recently the speedometer needle rises with the tachometer needle once the vehicle is underway, it rises to 40 mph and will stay there until the speed goes over 40 and will then record the correct speed. If I stop the vehicle the speedo neddle stays where it was for a while and then slowly drops to 0. Is there a diode between the tach and speed wiring or circuit on the instruments? Where is the pick up for the speedo? Thanks, Bob Merriam, Santa Cruz, Ca.
351. Q. Hi! I wonder if you could shed some light on my car problem: I currently drive a 1986 Honda Prelude 1.8l, with twin cams. Last year I had the Honda dealer perform a 130,000 mile maintenance (the meter now reads 130, 800). I also replaced the starter motor (used) at a local gas station. My problem is this: On any given day ( wet or hot/ dry days ) my car tends to want to stall. When starting the car the engine revs briefly to 2500, you give it some gas, and the rev falls to 1500. The engine temp at this time indicates "cold" When you engage the car to Drive, the revs fall to (approx.)1200. As the engine temp rises from cold to midway warm, if you stop at a light or are in stop and go traffic, the rev jumps briefly from 1200 to approx. 1500 then settles at around 500/ 600, and the engine/ car vibrates as if ready to stall. The revs remain at around 500/600. The vibrations only stop if you leave your foot on the brake while applying pressure on the gas pedal. The mechanic at the local gas station could not diagnose the problem (he thought it might be a vacuum leak) and suggested I contact the Honda Dealer. I indicated the above to the Honda dealer who suggested that my twin carbs could be the problem, and should (but could not guarantee that it would) alleviate the problem. He kept the car overnight to 'clean them' and quoted me a price of $1200 for each carb. I just had the sticker redone (last week), and the mechanic suggested I do a tune-up first and take it from there. (Since I just had the 130K maintenance - I don't think this will help) Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
352. Q. I have an 84 Honda Accord. The car will start after sitting for a day or more. It will run a short time and then quit. It is getting fuel. There is no arc off the coil wire even with new a coil. The igniter and wiring to the igniter check out ok. Timing belt looks ok. I'm open to suggestions.
353. Q. I have an 87 Nissan HB w/Z24 engine. First thing in the Morning it starts like a champ and once warmed up runs very good as long as I keep the idle high. But once she warms up it will not start and acts like its flooded. Once she cools all the way down she will start right up with some black smoke evident. If I was working on an older vehicle my diagnoses would be stuck choke but this electronic throttle body fuel injection got me asking... how?
354. Q. What might cause shimmy, shake or vibration at highway speeds?
355. Q. What causes high pitched squealing or cricket like sounds from the front wheels as the car is moving?
356. Q. I drive a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport that has developed an electrical problem we're unable to solve. With no warning, the vehicle will stall while it's being driven. The speedometer and oil, gas and battery gauges continue to give readings but the tachometer immediately goes to zero. The car refuses to restart, sometime for a number of minutes. The ignition switch and distributor cap have both been replaced (Both removed items showed burn marks) but this intermittent electrical problem has persisted. Please suggest alternate areas to run diagnostics on and possible sources of trouble.
357. Q. my name is john and i would like to know the torque specs for a 1997 chevy blazer with a 4.3 liter for the intake manifold. thank you.
358. Q. I have a 1995 chevy S-10 4cyl. I am having engine electrical problems. At different speeds there is hesitation and sudden stalling. I took it to a shop and had the fuel system checked which is fine and all the gounds checked. I had the ignition module replaced because the truck would no longer start. Now the problem started again. when it stalls all the electrical systems die for a second including the dash pannel and power steering How can I narrow down this problem?

Wear safety glasses or goggles when cutting, drilling, grinding or prying.
If you wear glasses, wear goggles over them.
Batteries contain sulfuric acid. If acid comes in contact with skin or eyes, flush with water
or a mixture of water and baking soda. Get immediate medical attention.
Work on a level, solid area when it is necessary to raise a vehicle.
Always use jack stands capable of supporting the vehicle weight.
Never work under a vehicle with only a jack as support.
Make sure that any hoisting device has a safe, working load rating adequate for the job.
Set the parking brake and block the drive wheels if the work requires running the engine.
